HOW TO: The Perfect Chunky Plait

So I recently promised that I would start writing some DIY & ‘how to’ posts, given that my family is incredibly crafty and arty (my mum and sister are designers / seamstresses / artists) I thought I really should share some amazing tips on customisation, craft ideas and designing and creating your own wardrobe. Now clearly this isn’t such an easy feat, so I thought I would ease myself in slowly and start with a little tactical ‘how to’ post.

I don’t know about you, but I seem to be spending (well wasting) time styling my hair at the moment, only to walk outside and within minutes be looking like a crazy scarecrow. This British wind and rain combination does not bode well for my locks, and my hair ends up looking like a greasy lions mane within minutes. So this post for me, and hopefully for you, is a very practical and necessary tutorial on a hair look that is completely weather proof. I’ve already seen some magazines covering the style, Look Magazine has recently covered a range of casual but chic styles including this one, and i’ve seen a number of people rocking the look.

So here it is, how to create a (weather proof) chunky fringe plait:

 
Step 1. So to start off all you need to do is sweep across a chunky section of your fringe from one side of your head, naturally the fatter your want your plait to be the more hair you should take across. You then simply begin braiding this hair as you would do with a normal plait (Weaving 3 sections of hair around each other).
Step 2. Once you’ve created a couple of braids, you should then begin adding some additional hair from above the plait. You should avoid taking additional hair from below the plait, as this will ensure you maintain a thickness to your barnet at the end.
Step 3. Continue to braid your hair adding a little more hair from above each time. You should work the plait around your head and as you do this gradually slope the braid downwards towards your lower neck. Your plait will begin to look very heltaskelter esque (in a good way). Once you’ve reached the end of your hair just add a little tie so that your hard work doesn’t fall apart.
Step 4. To finish off this effortlessly chic style simply tease out some hair at each section to give your plait a gorgeous and chunky look. You’ll only need to separate each section a tiny bit to add a whole lot of thickness to how it looks, and you can adapt this to however you want your plait to be.
NB: You can always stop your plait further up your head if you wanted to incorporate it into an up do, for example a bun / donut or simply a chic pony tail.
And there it is, my first ‘how to’ tutorial and hopefully a really easy but useful one to try out. I know for sure that I am going to be rocking this look continuously throughout the Winter to avoid any more hairmares. Today is one of those days, I’ve put some pics below of the style in my hair :)
