As I mentioned, yesterday I went to Winchester for the day and spent some time at the Christmas markets. First off it’s worth noting i LOVE christmas markets – just everything about them. Secondly I make a point to go every year, and last year I even ventured to hamburg with my friends for a weekend of Christmas market festivities.
You get Christmas markets pop up all over the country, and world for that matter, but sometimes it’s just a few stools and a bit of roasted chestnuts and doesn’t show off the full capability of a good market. London does winter wonderland which, don’t get me wrong, is great for a family day out, but it just doesn’t feel very ‘authentic’ in my opinion – a tad too commercial. After going to hamburg which is probably one of the most renowned places to go to see Christmas markets, I feel like I’ve seen the best of the best, so my expectations are high admittedly.
. Wrapping up for the day, more to come on the outfit soon .
This is why I love, LOVE, love Winchester Christmas markets each year. It feels completely authentic , real market huts, ice skating, a whole range of tasty treats up for grabs and it just feels like a ‘real’ Christmas market (not too commercial). Not to mention the fact it’s set up in the Cathedral grounds, which just makes the whole thing feel more exciting, grand and festive. The only thing the UK markets haven’t quite mastered yet is the Mulled wine bars – in hamburg these are just a masterpiece (a big barn type building kitted out with massive cauldrons and amazing ranges of mulled wine – and rum / amerretto to spike it of course. But despite this, for me, Winchester Christmas markets are the best i’ve visited in the UK and i’d really recommend a trip if you’re in the area.
I spent yesterday there with my boyfriend and my sister, we had a lovely little day pottering round, eating bratwursts (mmmm – my favourite) and drinking mulled wine. I spotted some great present ideas for my family and myself. I love all the big fur russian hats and I really want one for Christmas. After we had exhausted the markets we had a little wonder around the town and I spontaneously decided that now was probably the time to get some glasses after being told in March I needed them for driving (first time in nearly 25 years :O)
Today we’re heading back into Winchester – I can’t get enough, to pick up my glasses, and if I have my way, head back to the markets for Bratwurst & Mulled wine part 2. Perfect Sunday if you ask me.
What are you doing today? Have you visited any of the Christmas markets in the UK or Europe – which is your favourite?

Ah, I originally come from really close by to Winchester, I did the majority of my education there though have now moved to Bath for University, but I’ve always adored the Winchester Christmas market! It’s so funny to see pictures of it and Winc.hester – all memories for me :) They sell some great pancakes/crepes in the foodie bit too.
Oh and I’m totally convinced I saw a few old Winchester chums/acquaintances in your pictures too, haha.
My mum came to visit me the other day to see the Bath Christmas market which I dare say is ever so slightly better than the Winchester one….! I had a delicious hot chocolate with Bailey’s (read: 50% hot chocolate, 50% Bailey’s… my mum had to practically carry me around the market….). Christmas market’s really are lovely though, always a great place to go for some nice, thoughtful and alternative Christmas presents as opposed to the standard DVD’s off Amazon or books/gift vouchers etc. Plus it’s lovely to be in the spirit of everyone else and share the festivity!
Hope you enjoyed your weekend in Winchester :)
