HOW TO STYLE A LEATHER JACKET FOR FALL

The leather jacket is a staple garment all year round, it’s one of those wardrobe classics which never go’s out of fashion, and therefore spending a little money investing in a quality leather that will last you the test of time is key. I’ve owned a few leather jackets over my time (mostly faux, because back in the day that’s as far as my budget stretched), but actually it was only really last year that I invested in a real leather jacket, and this Reiss number won my heart. I have to say, the difference of a real leather is really noticeable, and so it’s one of those purchases (much like a designer hand bag or a good pair of shoes) that truly is worth the investment.

A leather jacket is also such a staple, because not only does it deliver year on year without a single ounce of ‘that’s last season’, it also delivers season upon season. From summer evening throw on’s, to Autumn layering to winter warmers with cosy knits & woolly hats. It has to be one of the most transitional pieces in all our wardrobes.

For fall, the leather jacket is all about layering, the simplest way to style the jacket is layered on top of your favourite transitional pieces, think a long sleeve midi dress like this Warehouse number, or even layered on top of your favourite knitwear, teamed with some classic skinny jeans and a pair of knee high boots (i’m desperate for these). The trick to styling a leather jacket in fall is to keep things simple, block colours, multiple layers & an understated ensemble to team it with.

In terms of colour and style, a classic black & tailored jacket is always going to deliver, but equally don’t be put off embracing muted tones, a nude, a dark navy, a rich burgundy, or even a deep green like my Reiss jacket. The important thing is to ensure you’re buying a colour you feel comfortable styling season upon season, and something that goes with your general wardrobe & your most worn colour palette. I debated long & hard about investing in this dark green leather jacket, but actually it’s been the perfect investment, slightly less harsh than a classic black version, understated detailing (which I love – the less zips & buckles the better), and surprisingly goes with pretty much everything in my wardrobe.
