Your Guide To Protaras, Cyprus

If you follow me on snapchat (follow me at mediamarmalade for all my adventures) or instagram then you’ll know I’ve just got back from a couple of weeks spent in Cyrpus, in Protaras. I’ve been to Protaras a couple of times before with Jase and his family and thought you guys might like to hear a few recommendations of things to do and places to go, in case you’re heading on a holiday there soon or looking for inspiration for an upcoming trip.

Protaras seems to have become quite a tourist haven in the last few years (not really my cup of tea I have to admit, I tend to like more untouched – read non tourist – locations like Agios Nikalaos normally) and with more and more people heading for their summer holidays there, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a little ‘luxe’ guide to Protaras. The best places to visit if you’re looking for a slightly more upmarket experience, away from the crowds and the places that I loved on my trip. So if you, like me, usually prefer visiting slightly more untouched, authentic, and exclusive style locations on holiday, then this guide is for you … think of it as the ‘hidden side of Protaras’.

Where to go: The Blue Lagoon

As I mentioned Protaras can feel a little busy and touristy at times, so I made it my man mission to find the most exclusive, authentic and untouched parts of the town … and that I did. A quick 10 minute walk along the beach past all the fishermen sitting on the rocks catching their fish for the day and past Fig Tree Bay a pretty part of the beach which is well worth a visit and a snorkel, you’ll find a secret little cove that is the ultimate bit of untouched paradise. Surrounded by white chalk cliffs and crystal clear waters was the blue lagoon … a sanctuary we discovered and made our own. This little cove was absolute heaven and became a daily visit of ours.

Where to Eat: Koi Lounge Bar

The koi lounge bar is one of my favourite restaurant bars in Protaras, in fact it IS my favourite. Whether it’s lunch time sushi and a mojito in the sunshine, or a chilled dinner with live music and some seriously delicious pan asian cuisine, Koi bar is the perfect, laid back, upmarket place to while away your holiday hours. The atmosphere is super calm, zen  like and it’s certainly a place you’ll find any excuse to go back to again and again.

Where to Stay: Sunrise Pearl Hotel & Capo Bay

Sunrise Pearl and Capo Bay are my two favourite hotels in Protaras, they’re the more upmarket of the bunch (along with The King Jason which also looks lovely but I’ve never stayed in), and provide enough seclusion from the over touristy main strip to allow you to feel like you’re getting a little more paradise than the high street might lead you to believe. We got to stay in one of the Sunrise Pearls private villa suites with it’s own garden and pool which was an incredible sanctuary and home away from home. The food and restaurant options at the Sunrise Pearl are also incredible, with the hotel owning most of Protaras’s best restaurants (Lemongrass, Kyklos and Fishbone) you’re never spoilt for choice, but the hotel restaurant itself is certainly notable with not only delicious food but live pianists each night for company too.

Where to Drink: Nalu & Coco King

Generally speaking I try to avoid the main strip at all costs, but i’d make an exception for Eden Square and in particular Nalu … a super funky, Ibiza style cocktail bar serving up a delicious Gin Bramble and chilled Cafe Del Mar tracks buzzing in the background. The perfect pre dinner cocktail spot … finished off with a tapinyaki at Kamakura Japanese. Coco King is a little pop up coconut stall on the main promenade overlooking the beach front, and it’s the perfect midday cooler. We visited almost everyday for a freshly cracked open coconut and a large helping of coconut frozen yoghurt.
