OUR CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Twas’ The Night Before Christmas
It’s officially the night before Christmas and today has been filled with the festivities, preparations and traditions which every Christmas Eve is always filled with. No matter how old we get, no matter how many years pass, the traditions of Christmas never fail & without little conscious thought my family and I fall into our routine & our ‘now’ traditions and prepare for the magical day that always lies ahead.
Even as I near my thirties I look forward to Christmas like no other time of year. The traditions and routines that fill December fill me with warmth and excitement, from the official putting up of the tree, to exploring London’s decorations, watching every Christmas movie multiple times on any evenings in we have (always with a mince pie and mulled wine to hand), to the many festive nights we have out throughout December with friends, family and Colleagues to mark the season, making a special effort to see our loved ones and do something extra special, just because it’s Christmas.
Christmas eve is no different. A day always spent in my pyjamas, at home with my family, me sat wrapping all my gifts for hours on end while my sisters sit around me with back to back Christmas movies playing to keep us entertained, while my mum & dad manically shop for last minute gifts and food before bringing my nan home for our Christmas Eve party tea. Jase & my dad texting throughout the day with the official count down to the big day itself & updates on our wrapping progress, looking forward to boxing days we spend together every year.
With most days running 100 miles per hour I just love the slow living of the Christmas holidays. And more than anything the traditions we’ve created over the last thirty years.
And as the evening settle in, tonights Christmas Eve is standing true to all our traditions. My presents are wrapped and under the tree. I’m still in my pyjamas despite darkness falling again, and an evening party tea is being prepared whilst snowballs start flowing.
Tomorrow we’ll wake early, open our sacks from Santa in bed, prepare a smoked salmon & champagne breakfast before settling in to open our presents we’ve spent the last month preparing for each other. Christmas dinner will be served late afternoon, and once the food comas have passed we’ll start the games & snowball marathon … the games will only stop once each and every one of us is asleep on the sofa.
And that will be it. Christmas day, and a month of preparation, Fin … you think!
Luckily for me Boxing Day we start all over again, as the 26th is Christmas day round two with my dad and Jase! More presents served with freshly made canapes & too much champagne, a delicious dinner which my dad will have spent Christmas day preparing, followed by flowing fizz & Christmas movies as once again, we all fall asleep on the sofa. Exhausted by the magic of Christmas & packed with love and joy.
Theres no other time of year quite like it.
