Winters Saviour To Your Fashion Wardrobe

It’s fair to say in the winter months your wardrobe can become a little stale mate, for any ventures outside it’s the same old teddy coat or winter warmers with the same comfy and cosy boots & probably the same hat, scarf and mitts too. Clothing underneath feels a little irrelevant and so in most instances comfort and warmth outweighs style and chic (but cold) accessorising.

I for one can really easily fall into the boring combo of denim jeans, oversized knitwear and the same boots and coat on repeat day in day out. Sometimes when you add rain and wind on top of the freezing temps, even my hair and makeup feel pointless because give  me 10 minutes outside walking to the train and I already look worse than I did when I woke up. Anyone else get me?

This winter though I’ve really been trying to keep my efforts up a little and avoid the fail safe option. Of course sometimes i’ve learnt a tough lesson, if you follow me on stories you’ll have seen many a late night walking home from work in open pumps at 5 degrees (bad move), but in large I’ve been trying to wear good outfits and tackle the cold through good old layering.

My most used trick this last 6 weeks or so has been blazers under coats. In the spring and summer a blazer acts as outerwear in it’s own right, blazers are also nine times out of ten quite a critical finishing touch to my outfits, and so layering my boyfriend blazers under my warmest coats has been a godsend for warmth and style. Not to mention the thermal layers hidden underneath adding a touch of cosiness.

I’ve pinned many a time the ultimate boyfriend blazer and coat layering street style snap for inspiration, but this winter I decided to embrace it myself as a more staple combination. The blazer and coat combo has also meant i’ve not shied away from wearing a slightly more considered outfit – culottes and tees, structured trousers and polo necks. I wouldn’t wear these outfits without the comfort blanket of a long length blazer, but couldn’t wear just a blazer in this weather, so the layers have come into their own in terms of maximising my wardrobe but also ensuring i don’t freeze my arse off.

The other trick is of course hidden layers, i’m not one to shy away from a vest and any additional touches to keep your neck warm really help (neckerchiefs are a great option for both fashion statement and warm neck needs). The more you can layer up underneath your statement garments the better. And of course there’s always packing two pairs of shoes for the more well versed of us – walking to work in your cosy uggs & swapping into those chilly ankle loafers is never a bad idea (trust me).

So there you go, the fine art of layering (no fine art at all, ahem). But this sort of outfit is one I’ve been living in lately – it’s smart for work, but warm enough to make it comfortable too.
