Finding Your Creative Style & How To Release Your Creativity
I don’t know if I’m alone in feeling this way, but I constantly find myself bursting with ideas and desire to be creative, but for some reason can never physically release that energy? Does that make sense?
I have a huge desire and inner urge to draw, paint and create, i’ve spent a fortune on pens, pencils, acrylic paints, nice sketchbooks, but i just can’t seem to actually … DO IT. I sit and don’t know how to create what is in my mind, I want to create something beautiful on my sketchbook, but i just can’t draw.
It’s incredibly infuriating.
I even buy journals to write and books to read, as I love to read (and when I get going I can’t stop), but sometimes I can’t even bring myself to open the first page. Let alone put pen to paper.
I think it stems from a fear or inner need for what I create to be ‘perfect’ (whatever that is), and because I am not an artist or at all trained in those formats of creativity, it’s going to be very very far from perfect. I know the process of creating art is really what its about, but when you’re driven to always do the best you can, I find it hard to then let all those principles and guards down.
I’m inpatient too. Art takes time. That’s another grapple.
What I do know is that photography is the one means of releasing my creativity that I can do, I can create, I can release my energy and often (although I am hard on myself) what I create is something I am pleased with and reflects my vision. That said, I do always admire others colour tones and relaxed ‘off guard’ style of photography and wish again I could relax my style and play around a little.
WEARING STINE GOYA
As we’re now all home bound and spending much more time ‘living’ (e.g. no commutes, more time at home, more time to do the things we like), I am really eager to play with my creative side and let it come out a little more.
I have sketchbooks ready, paint, pencils, pens, I have craft books, I have a book pile taller than me to read, and about 12 journals all sat waiting for pen to hit the paper …
So my final sign off to you is a little plea, a ‘HELP ME’.
Help me find a way to release my creative energy and create something visual and in line with what I envisage in my mind. Whether that’s sharing tips, your process, how you release your creativity, advice on how to just, START. I’d love to hear from you x

Couple of ideas to help get passed those clean white pages. I find that thinking of your sketch books as like note books so fill them with ideas, quick notes and not a master piece of finished paintings. The pressure of perfect pictures is too much even for an experienced artist.
Set yourself something to draw. This could be just items already in a room say like items on a kitchen side, pots, utensils. Or in a bedroom perfume bottles, plant, candle etc. Just a little group of things either leave in situ or arrange on a table where you want to work.
Have your paper/art pad or what ever you want to draw on and a pencil
First set yourself 5 mins
Look at the shapes rather then what the objects are, quick little marks on the paper.
It doesn’t matter what they look like , it’s what you see that you put down.
Do this about 5 times either on one page/piece of paper or as many as you like if you’re doing larger sketches. Each image can over lap the ones previously drawn.
Next decrease the time so repeat sketching but time yourself about 1.5 to 2mins for each sketch. This gets fun as you really have to free yourself and put anything down. But it really relaxes you and frees you up.
It’s so interesting to see what you’ve drawn it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t really resemble the little still life you’ve chosen.
Now you can have another go maybe change the angle you view your still life at or draw again if there was a bit you quite liked.
Or if you have coloured pencils add a bit of colour to your page. Look at your drawings as shapes again and colour in random squiggles.
These exercises will free you up from worring about creating a masterpiece each time. It’s all about having fun and it certainly gets you past the first page.
Have fun. Art is for everyone and everyone’s Art is worthy of that paper. ❤❤❤

I feel the same way most of the time! Oftentimes I think it’s a lot of perfectionism – having this perfect picture in our heads of a beautiful creation, a one-of-a-kind painting, or drawing, or photo, and then comes the sneaky fear of not getting it right. At least that’s how it works for me. I see a brilliant end result which gives me a burst of motivation, and then it fades. To counterbalance this, I would suggest trying anyway – get your pencils or your paint brushes out and just do it. Go with the flow, and see what you create that way. You will probably end up loving it more that you’d have thought at first! I hope you overcome this Melissa!
