Get Out Of Your Style Rut With A Wardrobe Overhaul
Do you ever find yourself stuck in a style rut, wearing the same things day in day out, and not feeling confident enough to vary off your safe and cosy comfort wear to wear one of those Girl Boss outfits you used to love so much (you know, the heels & power dress combo, or the unisex suit that makes you feel incredible). Sometimes to pull off those looks that make you feel great, you have to feel great in the first place to want to put them on. But with Christmas (aka: mass consumption), Winter and general ‘survival’ vibes right now, I’ve certainly found myself sticking to the same oversized jumper dress and boots, or standard jeans & boyfriend jumper.
And you know what, whilst it’s certainly comfortable, it doesn’t make me feel great, feel confident, or walk with that spring in my step.
What I realised as the New Year arrived was that my wardrobe needed a little spruce up, some new things, things that would give my wardrobe a new lease of life and things I felt comfortable (and cool) wearing. The sales provided the perfect opportunity to invest in a few ‘seasonal’ fashion pieces (I often find staples are beautiful but I need to pop a few trend pieces in to keep things fresh and exciting – let alone blog worthy), I mentioned my shopping spree here, but Its time to finally start sharing some of those buys with you and share a few tips to help you get out a style rut or give your wardrobe a little boost.
Try Something New
If you’re style is in need of a refresh, avoid simply buying more of what you already have. Seven oversized grey tone jumpers is probably enough, so why not try a fitted knit with bell sleeves or a cropped turtle neck. If you find yourself in a style trap, chances are when you go to the shops you’re looking at the pieces you know are tried and tested for you. But in order to shake things up, you need to look outside your box, try something new, experiment, test, learn and have some fun. Challenge yourself to buy something you’ve never bought before.
Mix Up Textures & Colour
And it to doesn’t have to be simply sartorial cuts (e.g. tailoring) or garments you mix up (although if you live in dresses, trying a pair of cigarette trousers out for size is obviously a great way of mixing it up), but it can be as basic as the colours, prints, and textures that you opt for. Embroidery and velvet are big this season, simply adding a little variety into your otherwise neutral toned cashmere and cotton wardrobe can really feel like a big shake up, even though sartorially or garment wise things are the same.
Shop High Street For Trends
First up, when you’re looking to give your wardrobe a little boost, whether it be seasonally or simply because you feel like you need a change from the staples you’ve become over relied on, opting for the high street is a good idea. The cost of designer is high, and if you’re trying something new, incorporating a style, print or texture you might not usually opt for, spending £200 – £400 on said item is a pretty hefty investment. In my opinion the high street offers the perfect opportunity to test and experiment with your style and invest in new pieces without having to over commit financially.
Take these velvet trousers as an example, a texture i’ve never rocked, a colour i’m not sure i’ve been brave enough to wear on my legs in a few years, but a look I really wanted to give a go. At £20 even if I only got 4 wears out of the item (which I hope won’t be the case) i’ve not really lost anything.
Designer for Staples
For me my designer pieces, which largely fall into shoes, bags & accessories are where I invest the big bucks. These pieces are timeless staples and things I want to invest in for a lifetime, not just one season. The high street is where I play with and mix in those seasonal fashion items and trends.
Fashion Is Fun
We can get swamped down in looking instagram perfect or catwalk thin … and really all this does is knock our confidence to try new things out when it comes to personal style and set un-achievable goals for what we feel we should look like (and how clothes should look on us). But it’s important not to forget that fashion should be fun, liberating, playful, enjoyable and should add and enhance your personality … don’t let yourself get stuck in a rut or feel uninspired as a result of ‘social norms’ and things that ultimately mean fuck all. Lifes too short. Wear the pink tights with pride.

This post was exactly what I needed to read right now as one of my ‘style goals’ for this year is to experiment more and try new things! I feel like I’ve been relying on my beloved basics a bit too much recently, and this post definitely gave me some more motivation and inspiration to venture out and think outside of my style box for once :xx
