How To Style This Seasons Favourite, Metallics
If you read my style rut feature a few days ago then you’ll know already that I’ve been really struggling to get inspired by my wardrobe and to really bring a little excitement and freshness to my style this last few weeks. Truth is I can’t seem to find any clothes I love or pull together looks that work on me right nowt, so I’ve become stuck in a rut of wearing the same thing over and over again. And not only is that dull in reality, it’s especially dull when you’re a fashion blogger too.
In an attempt to find some capsule Spring items that will really add a little vavavooooom to my wardrobe I’ve been hauling clothes from every store, 90% I’ve taken back, but the 10% I’ve kept has been like finding a pearl in the big, vast oyster ocean. And this metallic skirt from Zara was just that pearl. Finally something exciting, Spring fresh and despite the bold design, capsule for my spring wardrobe. I felt fab the moment I put it on and actually I’ve already found tons of ways to style the skirt, and more specifically the metallic trend already, which is what I wanted to share with you today.
HOW TO STYLE METALLICS: 4 TIPS TO HELP YOU ROCK THIS SEASONS FAVOURITE TREND
Dress it down
Firstly one of my favourite ways to style a statement item or a statement print / colour like metallic is to dress it down so that you over casualise the piece. A metallic skirt like this would look incredible with converse & a sweater, a simple styling that makes it wearable for everyday occasions and tones down the overt and bold style of the metallic material.
Keep it monotone
When you’re styling metallic, in my opinion you need to let the metallic do the talking, keeping your top and shoes simple, subtle and minimalist really allows the metallic garment to stand out and ‘make’ the look. This look is a great example of a toned down minimalist styling of a statement metallic item, the Zara midi skirt is most definitely the stand out element of the look, and the black sweater and shoes are fuss free and really let the skirt shine.
Make it statement
Rather than half embrace a trend, my opinion on styling a statement item like metallic is to just go for it, commit and make it the statement piece of the outfit. Of course there’s subtle ways to incorporate bold trends into your style, like shoes, accessories, or subtle touches, but I always find that going full hog and totally jumping on board with a trend always works best – if you feel a little uncomfortable, go with the dressed down styling to make it feel a little more covert.
Contrast lengths
One of my favourite ways to style metallic is through contrasting lengths. Mixing midi skirts with cropped sweaters or even better a long length knit jumper so you just see the subtle tones of metallic swishing underneath the knitwear. Equally styling a cropped metallic jacket with a simple denim Jean & casual white tee looks great, some of my favourite metallic looks are a real contrast in not only colour and tone, but also length and texture and a real juxtaposition of evening wear versus day wear.
