HOW TO DRESS DOWN YOUR WARDROBE CLASSICS

March 12, 2017

STYLE YOUR WARDROBE CLASSICS FOR EVERY OCCASION

When it comes to investing in your wardrobe, I am a big fan of a curated capsule wardrobe, a wardrobe underpinned with classics and accentuated with seasonal picks. This more finessed approach to investing in clothes is only something I’ve truly started to master in recent years as I near thirty, whereas in my past id find myself over buying and hoarding (the novelty of a pay check and my own space I expect).

But what comes with a more streamlined and curated wardrobe is the need to mix and match, optimise each piece in your wardrobe, and dress up and down your garments through clever styling and accessorising.

And most importantly making the most of those classic or investment pieces which may otherwise be reserved for Sunday best. This leads me to todays post, my tips, thoughts & own styling practices for dressing down my wardrobe classics into everyday and off duty looks.

HOW TO STYLE YOUR CLASSICS FOR AN OFF DUTY LOOK

 –

Classic tailoring & investment buys don’t have to be reserved for special occasions, often the contradiction of structured, classic or particularly dressy pieces with everyday essentials makes for the most chic of looks. Think a pleated skirt with an oversized jumper, a classic suit with a basic tee, or todays look, off duty mom jeans with a classic boyfriend blazer.

There’s something undeniably chic about a look comprised of things that ‘shouldn’t go together’.

One of the easiest ways to transition your classic pieces into your everyday style or off duty looks is to team it with things you’d otherwise wear, a luxe leather skirt with your favourite band tee, or a classic LBD with nike trainers and a ready to wear leather jacket. These everyday favourites will naturally tone down your classic pieces and make them wearable for the everyday, and not just dressed up office or evening looks.

It’s not just your wardrobe classics that this trick applies to, luxe accessories also apply too. Tone down a classic Chanel boy bag by styling it with ripped mom jeans & your favourite boyfriend sized white shirt.

The difference between styling up your favourite classic pieces, versus channeling them for an off duty look often comes with how the look is finished, a buttoned up shirt versus an untucked, roughly thrown on one, a co-ordinated two piece versus mix and matching your suit blazer with your favourite tee. Equally your hair, your makeup, the finishing touches can make all the difference.

Of course a chic jumpsuit can look awards season worthy, but swap your heels for converse & your Hollywood curls for a top knot & leather jacket and you’ve immediately created an everyday look out of a wardrobe staple.  The result is effortless, chic and more often than not oozes confidence.

When I’m seeking style inspiration and pinning my favourite looks, more often than not I find myself admiring the looks where classic pieces, wardrobe staples, timeless garments, are being styled into off duty, everyday and dressed down looks. It’s a style the Scandi’s and the Parisians have mastered well, understated styling and a perfectly curated wardrobe, and a style that I personally am channeling more and more right now. Not only making the most of each investment I make, but finding a kind of styling that makes me feel comfortable, confidence yet still look put together.
