A COAT TO INVEST IN THIS WINTER
And Why Bulk Fast Fashion Buys Are A Thing Of The Past
In season’s gone I’d splurge on a whole load of ‘average’ winter coats, buying multiple fast fashion pieces and not really doing due diligence on each piece I bought. I’d buy a jacket as soon as I saw one I loved, it might not have been the best quality, but it was affordable and it appealed then and there. Some of these pieces fared me well and in fact still feature in my collection now, but many had a few wears and little more. I’m sure we’ve all been there right – buying without too much consideration? ‘Investing’ in fast fashion and not really thinking about quality or long term durability The benefit of this approach as a blogger, was of course that I always had lots of new pieces to wear and style, but the reality is I was wasting money on poor quality pieces that I didn’t truly love & I was buying multiple versions of similar pieces because I hadn’t done my research the first time around.
In the last few years I’ve really changed my approach to shopping and fashion, instead of splurging on vast amounts of fast fashion, I’ve been investing in one or two very high quality, perfect fitting and more ‘investment’ pieces of clothing that not only look great as they’re better quality and fit properly, but they’re also standing the test of time due to the quality but also the fact they’re more ‘my style’ than ‘the fashion’.
When it comes to coats, rather than buy 6 new relatively low cost coats each season like I used to, I’ve started to invest in one, or at most two items that help build my overall collection. No more 6 versions of the same thing, every item is different, a classic and good quality so will last season upon season, year after year and in time help build my capsule coat collection.

Every wardrobe needs a dog tooth wool coat, they are classic, timeless and the perfect smart outerwear for any professional. The high street has tons of them, but I have to say having done some research prior to making my investment, the quality and tailoring can be pretty questionable, which is why when I found this wool maxi coat from Jigsaw I knew it was worth the investment needed – the quality was incomparable, the tailoring was good & actually designed for a woman not a teenager and I knew it was a coat that would last me a life time and not just the season.
Needless to say this winter alone i’ve been wearing it non stop, it’s the perfect coat to wear to work and looks great with autumnal colour tones & cosy knitwear underneath. It may have cost three times what I might have previously spent, but the point is i’m only buying one this year. The right one. It’s also a new style to add to my wardrobe, and offers a different style to my Whistles Navy Maxi Coat, my Jigsaw city coats in navy & burgundy, my cosy parka & of course my collection of faux fur & teddy coats & gilets.
I’d love to know if you aim for investment pieces over mass purchases too?

I love this coat: very sartorial and very British.
I totally agree with you, in fact I have invested in two jackets over the past: one parka and more elegant coat.
For me it is very easy to invest in some pieces with shoes and bags but with everyday clothes is harder.
