6 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BLOGGING FULL TIME

    MEDIAMARMALADE_CASUAL_STYLE-6

. LIVE THE DREAM . BUT FOUND IT IN REALITY .

Becoming a full time blogger is the dream for many of us, turning what is effectively a passion and a hobbie into your full time job, earning a living doing the thing you love, being paid to create content, be a photographer, an editor, a creative director. We all want to be paid to do the things we love, but now more than ever this pipe dream is becoming a reality for many bloggers out there. In fact, for some, these ‘blogs’ are now million pound businesses … the opportunity is out there & the advertising world is demanding genuine and authentic advocacy, content & talent to support their brands. The power and influence we have as bloggers, is outweighing that of traditional media & PR, and as a result the opportunity to turn our ‘blogs’ into businesses is ever pertinent.

I for one have long been debating the shift from full time employment, to self employment & taking my blog full time. But whilst i’m ambitious and driven (and unbelievably passionate about content), i’m also a realist and know that to take a leap from the career I’ve spent years and years working (and working really hard) for, to starting from (almost) scratch, takes a lot more than a leap of faith. Of course if you’re just finishing university or studying the opportunity is a little more transitional, but to leave a career at almost 30 is quite a different story I feel.

To leave your career or job to take your blog full time, needs some serious consideration, and today I thought i’d share some of those things to consider, to prepare & to think about before you take that leap of faith … I for one am working on all of these (and have been for the last 12 months) so that hopefully one day, that move from stable employment to being self employed makes total sense, and is no longer a ‘risk’, but a smart business move.

. 6 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BECOMING A FULL TIME BLOGGER .

“What if I fall? Oh,but my darling, what if you fly?” Erin Hanson

    #1 PASSION

First of all, you need to have passion. If you’re going to commit to starting a business and taking your blog into full time mode, you need to be passionate, you need to love what you’re doing, writing & creating because when you shift from a hobby to full time, the need for regular, brilliant content is no longer a nicety it’s a necessity.

    #2 FINANCE

Whilst blogging full time sounds lovely & actually quite simple (especially versus the crazy demands of the big smoke), in reality it’s not, creating wonderful content is only really one part of the overall ‘job’, and naturally finance is another. When you’re blogging full time, or even transitioning your blog into a business as I am, finance doesn’t just become a little treat for a piece of work every now and then, payment and finance management is critical. Would you do a days work for free? No, so why would you with your blog too.

Money, as a full time blogger or a self employed business, becomes super super important. Knowing where your next pay pack will come from & having a secure back up plan in case one month isn’t as fruitful as another is an absolute must. To be self employed & run a business, you need to be smart, savvy & practical when it comes to finance … and having some savings under your belt for emergency rent months is a wise move.

    #3 SET UP

Beyond the financial set up, you also need to consider your general set up, your equipment, where you’ll work (check out my pinterest for some inspiration), who will help you shoot features, your daily routine, your diary management, project management & networking. It’s all well and good working from bed at the start, but ultimately if this is your business, you need to have a professional set up and a work space which is going to aid your creativity and productivity.

The setup side of things in my opinion can be the easiest, but also, if you’re having to do this all up front can be expensive. Between my photography kit, lenses, body, as well as my laptop and desktop computers, my software for editing, and not to mention my mini office set up, i’ve spent thousands and thousands setting up my blog.

Having a plan for the set up, and a realistic check of what you need to kick off your business, is going to be key to it’s success & your ability to succeed.

    #4 BUSINESS PLAN

So it’s no surprises that you need a business plan, not just incorporating your finance and set up plan, but also your long term and short term plan for success … your goals, your key objectives and tasks to get there, your success measures, and of course the smaller actions and tasks you need to be implementing everyday to be able to grow your blog, your influence / reach / fans and ultimately your business. You need to be thinking goals, tasks, & measurement for everything you’re doing.

I wrote a post on ‘making your blog a business‘ which has all my advice on creating a solid business plan.

    #5 NETWORK

One very important implementational task will of course be networking, and not just for fun, for business too. Attending events, PR days, having meetings with brands and networks is no longer a little treat, but it’s actually a really important part of growing your brand, bringing in new work and securing the finance to keep your business running.

Networking is the one thing when you juggle a full time blog and a full time career that can be very difficult, as time is non existent. But before you even move into the full time space, you should have a secure network behind you, regular clients, regular work & a broad range of collaborations behind your back

As part of your business plan and the setup process it’s also really important that you have a clear view on what your brand is, what your blog manifesto is & what it is you can offer … having this clearly outlined on your blog, but also within your media pack, alongside rates, stats & opportunities (which is going to be key if you’re going full time) is a really important and useful step in making your blog a business.

    #6 AMBITION

And finally, alongside having the passion & the business mind to turn your blog into a business. You do of course have to have some ambition, not just the ambition to turn your blog into a business in the first place, but the ambition to keep innovating, keep creating, to keep progressing goals and objectives and to keep succeeding. The ambition to pick yourself up if you first fail, the ambition to keep going, keep pushing & keep trying.

The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.

    MEDIAMARMALADE_CASUAL_STYLE-2

So there you have it, the 6 things I think any blogger wanting to turn their blog into a business should consider, of in fact anyone wanting to set up their own business, whatever it is, should consider. I’d love to know if you’re a full time blogger, considering becoming one, or have any tips to add to my list? Your advice is always welcome :)

    . WEE WILLY WINKIE .

This weekend I had a little shopping splurge and one of the items I fell very quickly in love with was this super gigantic oversized shirt dress. Sometimes (all the time), I just want to throw on some super simple, super comfy, no nonsense clothes, and this dress is absolutely all of those things. In fact, it’s so relaxed it could pass as a nighty … which is where wee willy winkie comes in (do you remember the nursery rhyme?).

I wore this dress to work yesterday, and aside from the Wee Willie Winkie joke (I don’t blame them), i had no less than FIVE compliments on the little number. And at a bargain of £25.99 thats a good cost per compliment for day one of wear don’t you think? The dress is so simple that it looks rather boho chic teamed with a little pair of lace up heels & fedora. This dress is going to be a seriously well worn piece of clothing by the end of summer, I can already see myself wanting to throw it on every morning as I roll out of bed too sleepy to care what to wear.

Are you a fan of the oversized shirt dress? What do you think of this Zara number?

. NEW IN: STRIPED CROPPED TROUSERS .

For someone with a relatively conservative style, I have to say the shift into AW15 has started to give my style choices a little bit of ‘oomph’ … from culottes to these crazy circus esque print trousers, I seem to be embracing a little adventure into my clothing purchases and stepping away from the ‘easy’ options. Theres of course nothing wrong with a classic monochrome look (I love it), but actually embracing a little colour, crop & funk into your wardrobe does wonders for your mood and gives life a little bit of a fun boost I have to say.

I picked these trousers up in the Kings Road Zara store this weekend, I popped in for a little browse on my way for brunch at Bluebird and before I knew it I had an armful of prints, boho cuts & AW15 must haves ready to try on! I fell in love with quite a few pieces, these trousers included, and came home to a round II shopping spree on the Zara website which is now jam packed full of new season goodness. After the shopping doubt the last 6 weeks has enforced on me (due to a lack of anything enticing on the high street), I seem to now be in a shopping monsoon, spending my entire salary on goodies from my favourite stores. In the space of a week i’ve managed to buy a whole load of Whistles and Zara goodies … from culottes & cigarette trousers, to striped trousers, & cropped trousers in every colour possible (well burgundy and navy) … not to mention the army of slogan tees i’ve bought & the amazing green jumpsuit that i’m so excited to have delivered. SO yes, shopping I have been!

The great news for you is, there’s a whole ton of new outfit posts coming your way, and a little AW15 inspiration to say the least!

In the meantime, what do you think of these incredible, crazy, bold striped trousers I picked up?

5 CAREER TIPS YOU CAN PUT INTO ACTION THIS WEEK

Mediamarmalade How To Cope When you're feeling overwhelmed

. 5 TIPS EVERY CAREER GIRL SHOULD PUT INTO ACTION THIS WEEK .

I’m sure most of us are career driven, ambitious and wanting to succeed in work, whether thats your own business or working for a company, but with the demanding & pressurising environments work can bring, it’s often easy to forget our ambitions, dreams & goals in favouring of tackling the jobs in hand. But the most successful people always have their own goals at heart, they’re always working towards something & don’t lose check of their dreams in and amongst the stress that everyday work brings. So today I wanted to take a step back, and acknowledge a few little things that I think will help us all on our journey to career, and life success … specifically 5 things that we can put into action this week, that’ll help us, our careers & our ambitions in the long run!

    #1 SET YOURSELF A GOAL

First things first, I don’t think any ambitious or driven person is motivated by ‘coasting’, coasting through life, coasting through work & coasting through your career. When it comes to pushing your career, progressing and expanding your skill set, 90% of the work is required by you, if not 100%. Yes others may offer training, or opportunities, but these will be based on your work, your passion, and your drive to achieve something … the potential they see in you. If you haven’t worked out that ‘something’, this week is the time do it. What is your next goal, what is it you’re working to achieve, what is it that you want to succeed with.

It could be super short term, for example to ace a presentation or deliver a great piece of work, or it could be longer time like learn a new skill set, get a promotion, prove you deserve a pay-rise or even work into a new role. Whatever it is, make it your goal, and once you know what it is you’re working toward, focus on your plan of action to get there.

I find having some goals to work towards highly motivating!

    #2 ASK FOR FEEDBACK

No career girl (or man) is ever going to get anywhere without a little constructive feedback and coaching. It’s not really within the ‘British’ culture to ask for feedback, and take it on board, but if you want to succeed, develop, progress, and be a success then feedback is critical. Whether it’s asking for a formal review with your line manager, or simply asking for quick bit of feedback after a meeting, or a piece of work that has been delivered. It’s always great to ask for feedback, “what is it i’ve done well” or “where could I improve for next time”, not only because it allows you to develop but also it sets a great precedent for everyone around you too … it really shows you care about your career and your work.

    #3 EVALUATE & PRIORITISE

As a driven person, more often than not I find myself with too much on. I work hard, and I will never deliver anything but 100%, but sometimes with this attitude you can find yourself drowning in the sheer volume of tasks in hand. The only way to deliver great work, consistently, and ultimately progress your career, is to become a good time and work load manager. Having the ability to evaluate deliverables, prioritise work streams, delegate effectively and ultimately as a result deliver great work consistently, efficiently and effectively, is the key to success & progression.

Saying yes to everything isn’t the answer … managing expectations, work loads & time is!

    #4 WORK LIFE (RE)BALANCE

And with evaluation and prioritisation comes work life balance. Success isn’t just about a job title and a salary pack, success is life happiness, wellbeing & that feeling of content. Often driven people like myself can let the balance swing out of sync every now and then, and before long you realise your every living moment is spent thinking about or doing work … this isn’t good for you, your relationships or your happiness, so taking a moment to check and realign your work life balance is key.

Sorting out this balance, ultimately will affect positively on your work too, happy, content and relaxed minds deliver better work, more efficiently and generally are more productive. It’s often hard to see this when you’re stressed out and busy … but it’s true and if you want to do well, you have to remember it.

    #5 KNOW YOUR PLAN

If you want to feel happy about work, the time you’re putting in and the effort your committing to the job, then you have to know it’s working towards your end goal. Yes short term goals are great for keeping you ticking over and continually learning and developing, but actually having a point of view on your overall career plan is key. You don’t have to know what you want to be when you ‘grow up’, but where do you want to be in 12 months, 18 months or even 24 months time? Do you want to be doing the same thing? Probably not, you probably want to have progressed a little, taken on some new projects, maybe even shifted into your ‘dream role’.

Don’t ignore the pipe dream … have a dream, and make a plan to achieve it.

Mediamarmalade_Career_Tips-7I’d love to know if you put any of these tips into action this week, or if you’re already doing them? Let me know your best career tips too?

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR OLYMPUS PEN

    Mediamarmalade Olympus Pen

    THE OLYPUS PEN

    Whats all the fuss about?

You probably have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard, seen or at least come across the Olympus Pen. Ever since their incredibly successful ambassador programme (brands, this is why you use bloggers) the camera has become THE accessory of the season, no the year. I for one resisted the surge of interest for some time, I am an avid canon user, a loyal 5D III coveter and generally just wasn’t in the market for a beautiful, nifty, little cross camera.

However that all changed earlier this year when the prospect of wifi-ing images to my instagram & being able to shoot on the go without lugging around the 7 ton DSLR I love so much, registered. I decided to invest in the EPL7 (more recently replaced by the EPL8 in case you’re in the market) for my birthday using gift money from my family … I loved the camera and used it largely for just holidays and being out and about (but not for my blog) and then a few months ago when I noticed a little John Lewis offer on I bought another lens … and from then on i’ve found myself turning to this little camera more often, using it for blog posts (without anyone noticing the difference) and also just found it really nifty and actually a really good, professional little camera.

So thats the context behind my adventure into Olympus life. My 5D III is of course my number one partner in crime, but having worked out how to use this little beautiful thing, I really do think its an incredibly good little camera and my love for it is undeniable.

So today I wanted to share with you the 5 things about this camera I love, but hopefully also 5 little tips to help you get the most out of your own Olympus if you have one (which I’m sure most of you do).

When I first buy any piece of tech, especially when it comes to cameras, I always like to read as many advice and tips posts as possible to ensure I get up to speed and can use my kit to the best of it’s ability as soon as possible. The Olympus pen isn’t the easiest camera to navigate, in my opinion this is because there are simply so many options (which is great), it just takes some time to suss them all out, so today I thought I’d share all the things I’ve learnt & discovered to help you too.

But first things first, you need to just get out there and play with it, work with all the shooting settings (manual, auto, AP priority, Art etc), get a good idea for all the bits you like using, teach yourself how to use the settings that create the sort of images you want & just have a little fun. Then get into the nitty gritty …

    Mediamarmalade Olympus PenMediamarmalade Olympus Pen

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR OLYMPUS PEN .

    #1 CUSTOMISE

Once you have a good play on your camera, you’ll want to customise the settings and functions of the camera to set it up for YOU and what you need. The great thing about the Olympus is that with a little tuition there a couple of nifty ways to make the camera settings & functions a little easier to navigate (i’m still learning these handy tricks myself).

The side bar settings menu on the camera is a little difficult to use, takes some time to adjust & change & could just be a little easier to use. The great news is there is a way to customise your camera to make this menu a little easier to use. ‘ The Super Control Menu‘.

This all in one menu puts all the essential camera settings into one easy to use screen (ISO / Shutter Speed / White Balance / F Settings) – The SCP. This menu isn’t auto turned on, so requires you to do it via your control settings. Simply go to Menu / Control Settings / Click P/A/S/M / Then Set SCP Live. Voila.

PLUS: Of course you can also customise the camera itself with it’s flip down screen which is perfect for shooting Flat Lays, selflies or #fromwhereimstanding shots for your instagram!

    #2 DOWNLOAD THE APP

Not only does this little camera have the ability to transfer images straight to your phone, which if we’re honest is why most bloggers absolutely love it, the app function does SO much more. One of my favourite little discoveries was that the app can also work as a remote control, so whether you’re looking to shoot a pic of yourself, you and your friends or just of something and you can’t be behind the lens, the app allows your phone to take total control, focus and shoot. It’s absolutely genius & a real asset to the camera.

    #3 UPGRADE YOUR LENS

Of course the Pen itself is brilliant, I bought the white EPL7 camera with the pancake lens kit (so it wasn’t too massive) and thought it was brilliant, but it was only when I upgraded my lens that this camera became a rival to my Canon 5D III for blog photos. I invested in the 45mm F1.8 lens which I managed to buy on offer in John Lewis and having always been  a fan of a low F number lens (my 50mm F1.4 & 85mm F1.8 canon lenses are my absolute favourites) I knew the potential this lens could offer for those beautifully sharp yet bokeh style images I love so much.

And the lens did just that. It’s the perfect ‘blogger’ lens & works really hard on the camera. It’s not cheap, but quality never is. If you’re looking to use this camera full time for your blog, then I’d really recommend looking into this lens.

    #4 AUTO VERSUS MANUAL

I always recommend shooting on manual but with the Olympus Pen I have to say the auto shooting function does have it’s benefits. Often when you’re out and about and shooting in varying locations you don’t want to adjust every manual setting (ISO / Shutter / F number etc) for every photo, and so a hybrid between manual and auto comes in quite handy (this is even more useful on the Olympus Pen where the settings aren’t the easiest to adjust for every shot via the side menu as I mentioned in point 1), and the Olympus ‘auto’ setting offers just that.

When i’m looking for quick and easy shoots I sometimes work on ‘auto’ and simply use the ‘brightness’, ‘white’  & ‘shadows’  settings to adjust the photo to a lighting that I like. It’s super simple, works really well & just transforms your photos a little (but without having to have the mastery of shooting in manual). You can also (if you don’t have a F1.8 lens) set blur levels here too, so you can create a beautiful bokeh background even with the basic lens.

If you want more tips on shooting manual, learning to use your camera or simply improving your photography then click on the links or head here.

    #5 ACCESSORISE

This isn’t necessarily a functional tip on how best to use the camera, but It’s more an aesthetic one. The camera itself comes with a chunky Olympus strap, practical, but ugly. I decided to treat myself to a little natural leather strap for my camera which means I can carry it over my should like I would my bag … not only does it look super pretty with my white retro camera, but also just makes things a little more easy to carry around. If you’re feeling like a little shop, then I’d check out the accessories for this camera because they’re beautiful.

Petersham Nurseries sounds like the ‘hot topic’ of the month right now, I haven’t heard so many people, magazines and bloggers talk about the foodie destination of the moment since Alexa Chung for AG (or something equally fanatic). But the best and also most ironic thing of all about the recent surge of love for the nurseries is that it’s actually right on my doorstep. Being a Richmond girl, Petersham Nurseries have been under my nose for the last 5-6 years without me even giving them the time of day to pop in for a little stroll, afternoon tea or even their incredible restaurant lunch. Jase and I popped along to the nurseries the other weekend for a leisurely Saturday out and about, we went along to suss out what all the fuss was about, and left fully getting it. We spent some time wondering around the nurseries, but the magic and wanderlust really happens when you enter the dining area, whether it be the main restaurant which is just so beautiful and whimsical, or the cafe area where you can grab yourself a healthy hearty lunch from the cafe and find a spot in the sunshine to eat. Everything from the decor to the ambience makes it such a special little sanctuary, and the food is just the cherry on top.

We ate at the cafe and had the most delicious selection of home made salads and quiches, but we’ve promised ourselves we’ll book a table for a luxury afternoon spent in the main restaurant with a full three course meal & plenty of fizz to boot soon.

Have you visited the nurseries? I really recommend you head west for the day and give some of Richmonds best a little try.

  • HOW TO COPE WHEN YOU’RE FEELING OVERWHELMED

HOW TO COPE WHEN YOU’RE FEELING OVERWHELMED

Mediamarmalade How To Cope When you're feeling overwhelmed

. DO YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF FEELING OVERWHELMED BY WORK, YOUR BLOG OR LIFE? .

Feeling overwhelmed is something that i’m sure more and more of us are faced with feeling on a regular basis, and something that todays demanding industries unfortunately create due, not to mention the pressure we create with our ambitions and drive for success in everything we do.

Being overwhelmed is not nice, in fact it can be debilitating, can stop you thinking clearly, can cause you to panic and stress and generally just puts a negative filter on any situation making it much harder to cope with. Whilst the environments and the demands we work under are unlikely to suddenly change, what can change is how we cope in these situations and what we do to manage periods where we feel overwhelmed.

Today I wanted to share 5 pieces of advice, to help you cope when you’re feeling overwhelmed. I hope you find them helpful and i’d love to hear your advice too!

Mediamarmalade How To Cope When you're feeling overwhelmed

HOW TO COPE WHEN YOU’RE FEELING OVERWHELMED

    #1 MAKE A LIST

When you feel overwhelmed it’s usually because there’s too much going on, too much being asked of you, too much to deliver, and simply not enough time to do it. Feeling overwhelmed is definitely something that happens to a lot of people working in demanding industries like media / advertising, law and finance. For me the easiest way to take check when i’m feeling overwhelmed is to simply make a list of all the things i’ve got going on … from there I have a much clearer view on what needs doing, what needs prioritising and what needs to be pushed back or challenged.

So first things first, get a clear view of what is going on, and what needs doing by when! it’ll help you, but also provide the business with a clear view on tension points.

    #2 BE CLEAR

Once you have a clear view on all the things to be done, or the list of things causing you to feel overwhelmed, figure out where the pressure points are, what is causing the tension (is there a bottleneck or no time to deliver on the work or tasks), and of course have a think about what it is you actually need to make things better. Do you need some help or support, do you need to move a deliverable or do you simply need to ask for something to be taken off of you?

Have a clear view on what is going  on, where the pressure is, why their is a problem, and what you need to resolve the issues.

    #2 SPEAK TO SOMEONE

Once you’ve done that, speak to someone. If you work in a company talk to your boss, if it’s to do with your social life speak to friends and family and explain how you’re feeling and what you need to change to make things manageable, or whatever the situation is, find someone to talk to, to share your situation and seek support and advice.

Nothing will change unless you do something about it, unless you flag the issues and make a suggestion for how it could be resolved

    #4 REMEMBER YOU

In all this, when you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed or panicked, just remember that the number one priority is of course you. Your health, your wellbeing, your happiness. Nothing is worth you breaking over, and so at some point you must just take a moment to stop, and prioritise you.

Factor in some time for a break (breaks are really important), stop and have a long bath, or even just try and factor in some time off, so you have something to look forward to, the light at the end of the tunnel.

    #5 TAKE CONTROL

But the best tip of all … is to take control. By doing steps 1-4 what you’re really doing is taking control of the situation, managing it, and making sure that what originally felt super overwhelming, now feels okay, possible, manageable.  But like I said, to turn the situation around, you must take control.

    . #BOSSGIRL : MY WORK STYLE .

After a weekend of countryside bliss, i’m back in the big smoke with a bang, a jam packed 7 week schedule, a whole ton of pressure & some serious power outfits to see me through. When the going gets tough, so does my style. Gone are the flirty dresses and comfy sandals, here are the power trousers, the crisp shirt and the ‘don’t mess with me’ stilettos. When you’re not feeling 100% game, dressing at 110% will do wonders to boost your confidence, make you feel a little more in control and give you the oomph you need to get cracking.

This outfit is my new favourite power look for work. The trousers were a little Whistles treat I picked up last week when I was in desperate need of a little retail therapy, whilst they were bought on a bit of a whim, actually i’ve worn them loads already and they’re just the perfect fit! My favourite look so far is the trousers teamed with my tencel blue whistles shirt, it keeps the trousers casual but with a heel looks perfect for a day of meetings!
