5 WAYS TO GET MORE BLOG IDEAS. AND TURN THEM INTO REAL CONTENT.

    Mediamarmalade Blog Tips

. BLOG IDEAS: HOW TO GET MORE IDEAS, AND THEN GET THEM ONTO YOUR BLOG .

Having ideas for content sometimes comes super easily, and other times can feel like getting water out of a stone. Regardless of which of these camps you tend to sit in (often I have more ideas than I have time to think about), there are some really easy ways to a) get more ideas and b) get them onto your blog, and today I wanted to share my little tips and tricks that I use to get ideas for content and then make them into something you guys might like to read.

For me, it all comes down to a process, and not a formal and strict one, just a simple little routine that helps keep ideas and content flowing, and ensures no great brain wave is ever lost.

. 5 WAYS TO GET MORE BLOG IDEAS. AND TURN THEM INTO REAL CONTENT .

    #1 NO PRESSURE

First of all, no good ideas come from sitting out your desk and trying to force out something genius. We all know this, but sometimes we don’t acknowledge it. The first step to becoming a little more creative and getting your ideas flowing is just to remove the pressure. Take a break, go for a walk, meet your friends. Most of my best ideas come to mind during my commute to work or when I’m just sat around relaxing, reading magazines or even just having lunch. The best stimulus for ideas is everything around us. Not your desk.

So first things first, let your ideation be a little more natural. Take away the pressure and just let your mind free a little. I wrote a whole post on boosting your creativity here which you might find helpful.

    #2 CAPTURE EVERYTHING

    Capture everything. Seriously.

My best ideas come when I am out and about, so I always jot them down in a note pad or on my phone notes pages to make sure I don’t lose them. If they’re a developed idea, I also add additional details so that I don’t forget what I was thinking by the time I get round to writing my post.

It’s more often than not when you’re out and about, having fun, that your content ideas will come to you. So be sure to capture them.

    #3 ALWAYS ON

Naturally when it comes to creativity and thinking up ideas, it’s always on, it’s non stop. So you have to be prepared and ready. One big tip I have for turning your ideas into real content, is to carry a camera around with you as often as possible. I know DSLR’s are crazy heavy, but heres where investing in a little point and shoot is a good idea, light weight, easy to carry around and means you can snap pictures for content whenever and wherever you want.

I use the Canon 5D Mark III for my photography, but recently bought myself the Olympus Pen with the F1.8 lens to shoot blog shots on the go. It was a genius decision, because we’re often out and about enjoying life, whether it be a lunch in a new cafe, a little stroll around a cute or quirky village, or meeting with friends who all look impeccably stylish, but rather than let these moments go without capture, by having a camera on you at all times you can start to create content from moments that you hadn’t even planned.

And in fact, more often than not these sporadic moments create the best content – city guides, restaurant recommendations, street style posts.

Open your eyes and capture what you see, what makes you happy and what makes you inspired. Chances are it’ll a) make a great post, and b) help inspire you when you’re back home too.

    #4 MAKE A START

When it comes to turning an idea into an actual piece of content, the best thing to do is just make a start. Even if that means starting a new post with a title, and saving the rest for later, or whether it’s shooting some pictures, to have ready and waiting to go.

More often than not my blog process consists of non stop ideas which I capture on my phone, a few hours a week of writing these into draft blog posts, a day dedicated to shooting, and then ad hoc time spent finessing each post daily. It’s an always on, fluid process, but they key to it, is simply making a start.

    #5 PLAN

Whilst the process is fluid and always on … it does help to have a plan. Have a plan of content that always keeps you a few days ahead, or a week ahead if possible. This means you’ll never be sat at your desk, desperate for inspiration and trying to force an idea out so you can ‘knock something up’. Forced content is never as good as the content you love, are passionate about and that inspires you.

So have a plan, whether it’s a little schedule, or a weekend dedicated to getting ahead or even just a plan of themes or topics you might want to write about. Ensuring you have a back up of content, inspiration, photos and ideas is key to always being able to turn a thought, into a full piece of content.

So there you have it, 5 simple tips, a fluid process, and some of my tricks to help you have more blog ideas, and importantly turn them into content for your blog. I’d love to hear what tips you have and what your creative process is?

. ESCAPING TO THE SEASIDE : MY STYLE .

Last weekend Jase and I spent Saturday in Bournemouth, a seaside town on the south coast of England, and in fact the little town I lived in for 3 years whilst I was at university too. I love the seaside, so having it on my doorstep was heavenly. Now it’s a little further away, but I always try and go back as much as I can to relax and absorb the salty air which could cure any stress or anxiety. The beach was a little manic on Saturday, first day of summer holidays n’ that, but we managed to find a little spot a little further down where we made camp for the day. I took my camera and managed to persuade Jase to snap some photos, the sun was in and out of the clouds, but when it did peep out, it made the most wonderful setting.

. ZARA SHIFT DRESS . BODEN DENIM JACKET .

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”910745″]

Theres nothing like the beach, bare toes & floaty dresses. My Zara dress is the most perfect beach number, it’s so floaty and whimsical it suits the seaside mood absolutely perfectly.

I’ve decided that I need to buy a beach hut. Probably not on Bournemouth beach as it’s so busy, but perhaps a more secluded beach like Mudeford (my favourite little escape) and make it into a little office and city escape. Get myself a little desk and call it base. Wouldn’t it just be the most amazing thing to have a beach hut office for blogging? I’d get so much done, the seaside fills me with so much inspiration. I would also love to go on a san diego whale watching trip in the near future! One day I’ll be able to see these beautiful creatures for myself, I hope.

Are you a seaside lover like me? I can’t wait for the weekend now, what do you guys have planned?

    . BOYFRIEND BLAZER & RAINY DAY .

Last weekend Jase and I went to Celtic Manor with his family for a little birthday lunch for him. It was a lovely day out, full of delicious food and a little wander around the gorgeous countryside too. Unfortunately the rain did decide to join us for the occasion, hence these drizzly photos, but regardless we had a fab time and I decided to wear my new favourite summer dress despite the rain.

This suede dress has become my go to outfit for special occasions, it’s just such a fab, easy throw on dress, super comfortable so great for dinner or drinks and also just looks so chic given it’s real suede. The weather was a little rotten on Sunday so I threw on my Topshop boyfriend blazer just to keep things laid back and actually it kinda worked.

I’m hoping the sun returns for the weekend as i’m really looking forward to a chilled weekend, i’m hoping to go to Petersham nurseries on Saturday and I have a wedding Saturday night which will be great fun. Now just to decide what to wear.

Have you got any weekend plans (i’m getting ahead of myself here, thinking it’s friday already I think)?

HOW TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AT WORK

. 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AT WORK .

Confidence is one of those annoying traits that often feels like it comes natural to some people, and not to others, it’s also somewhat genetic too. But regardless of whether your super confident 99% of the time often when thrown into a high pressured situation, everyone needs a little confidence boost and suffers from a mix of anxiety, nerves, self doubt or just total panic. But guess what, it’s normal. Some people hide it well, others don’t. But regardless of which camp you sit in, there are a few tricks I’ve mastered over the years which I really help boost your confidence, particularly at work or ahead of a big meeting or pressured situation which I thought I’d share today.

    mediamarmalade blog

. HOW TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AT WORK – 5 TIPS .

    #1 PEP TALK

First of all, with any high pressured or stressful situation, you need a little pep talk. I’m sure you pep talk others all the time when their having their own moments of need … But don’t forget you can pep talk yourself too. Get yourself in a good positive state of mind, let your brain have some clarity, pipe your cave man down (read more on the caveman here) and generally just take back a little mental and emotional control.

    You can do this.

    #2 PREPARE

If you want to feel confident, and confident you won’t fail, then you must prepare. Yes some people can wing it in the moment, but often it’s luck, you can never be prepared enough, especially for when it’s a situation you’re feeling a little nervous or stressed about.

The more prepared you, the more confident you will feel.

    #3 PERSPECTIVE

Get some perspective, In reality I suspect the situation we’re stressed about is not life or death,  it’s not going to affect some life changing situation, so let’s get a little perspective. Is this worth me feeling broken, panicked, stressed and self doubting … Chances are the answers no.

Also by putting the job in hand into some real perspective you often realise how much simpler the task is and you take a little pressure off your shoulders.

    #4 PANTOMIME

Pantomime. Treat your meeting, the situation or the project a little like a pantomime, before any pantomime there’s script writing, creative direction, not to mention rehearsals. Why not treat work situations in this way too … Back to preparation, the more you do before hand to make you feel comfortable about the situation, naturally the more confident you will feel.

Practice speeches in front of the mirror or friends / family.

    #5 POSITIVITY

Most of all focus on positives, keep channeling your inner positivity, keep an open mind and try to banish any negatives as soon as they enter your mind. If you’re truly worried, write down your concerns and focus on addressing them one by one.

The key is to clear your mind of doubt and negativity, the more positive energy you’re able to channel, the more adaptable, prepared and focussed you will be.

And of course that means you’ll look and feel a whole load more confident!

    . BRITISH SUMMER : A WHIMSICAL BRITISH STYLE .

In complete contrast to yesterday’s rather drizzly post, today i’m embracing British summertime (the good side of it, not the summer showers), the sunshine, whimsical outings in the countryside & summer evenings spent al fresco. Aside from my love of the south coast and British seaside, the countryside is another part of British summer time I absolutely adore. It’s where I was brought up and a place I love to go to feel relaxed, happy and at home, having Kew Gardens and Richmond park on my doorstep are my way of keeping the countryside close in London.

Flocking to the countryside for a little city escape, spending my days picnicking, drinking fizz & eating strawberries, and scoffing fresh scones & clotted cream with my friends and family is one of my favourite things during the Summer. Theres nothing like being outdoors, enjoying the long summer days, sitting outside and barbecuing with a glass of pimms until the sun finally disappears, heaven. Naturally when I leave the city, and reside back to the countryside, my style naturally relaxes, unwinds a little and becomes a little more whimsical.

This outfit is just that, relaxed, embracing my innate but often hidden whimsical British style, and generally just a little more feminine – the skirt is a MinkPink number and just the perfect summer skirt, it looks perfectly with a simple black tee & some chic lace up heels. I wore this outfit last weekend whilst my family came to visit for a day in the garden and a tasty summer barbecue.  When I wear this kind of outfit, i feel so care free, relaxed and feminine. I really should wear this more often.

What’s your innate style? Do you find your style changes from the city to the countryside?

. WHEN SUMMER ABANDONS YOU – RAINY DAY STYLE .

It’s fair to say that Summer appears to have abandoned us, we’ve gone from summer skirts and bohemian blouses weather to wellington boots and parka coats, okay well not quite that extreme, but theres definitely a shift in temperature and a complete lack of sunshine. As a result i’ve gone back to transitional basics … a simple denim jean, a casual tee and the most reliable outerwear for this type of seasonal confusion, the leather jacket.

This weekend was quite the adventure, heading from London to Bristol for Jase’s birthday and then touring the south west for lots of days out, maximising the one day of sunshine we had in Bournemouth and then spending Sunday at Celtic Manor for a birthday lunch for Jase. Sadly the weather didn’t hold out, but nonetheless we made the most of our day there and enjoyed some seriously tasty food before travelling back to London for what is going to be a super hectic week at work for me. In many ways the weekend was the perfect escapism to clear my mind before the craziness that is ahead.

What did you get up to this weekend? How are you adapting your style for this drizzly weather?

. TOP TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR SUMMER BLOG SCHEDULE .

Summer is a funny time of year when it comes to blogging, it often feels like the quiet before the storm in the months before September, when fashion week arrives and the blogosphere rockets. But before the fashion week storm, the blogging world seems to lull a little, readerships seems to slow, content seems to stall and generally things just go into hibernation a little.

As a blogging obsessive I blog daily all year round, but often feel like during summer months I’m a little more alone with it all, with people gallivanting around the world on holiday and everyone too busy having fun to spend hours stuck inside reading blogs, real life can often take priority (and so it should).

But despite the lull of summer, there’s still a reason to blog, an audience wanting new exciting blog content and new posts to inspire or provide some escapism. Blogging doesn’t have to totally come to a halt in summer … You can tweak and adapt your content to capture interest and keep your blog alive during the summer months.

So today I thought i’d share my 5 tips to help you plan your summer blog schedule, to keep your readers coming and your blog traffic flowing.

    Mediamarmalade Blog Tips

. 5 TIPS FOR YOUR BLOG SCHEDULE THIS SUMMER .

#1 WHAT DO YOU WANT TO READ?

First things first, when it comes to summer blogging, start with what it is you’d like to read and most importantly what you want to write about. Don’t feel ‘stuck’ to your usual blog content themes and schedule, the summer months do change things with peoples routines changing, holidays taking people out of the country and generally what we want to read and seek inspiration from changing too. Adapt your content as you see fit … for me I have an increased interest in reading healthy summer recipes, exercise tips, summer blogging tips and of course travel guides and photo diaries too. In turn the content I want to share on my blog is slightly more lifestyle and inspiration focussed too, rather than my usual focus on style posts & career and blogging tips.

    #2 PLAN IN ADVANCE

The best thing about Summer is holidays (for me at least), but this in turn means weeks away from the usual day to day grind, and therefore my blogging routine and usual schedule too. The summer often gets filled with weekend getaways and more social plans than normal making most of the sunshine and light evenings … whilst I wouldn’t change this for the world, it does mean I need to be super organised with my blog, to ensure I keep my content flowing and my blog up to date.

My top tip for blogging in the summer is to plan a lot in advance, keep yourself organised and try and schedule as much as possible to keep the weight off your shoulders whilst you’re enjoying the summer too.

    #3 TRAVEL BLOG

As I mentioned above, one thing I love to read during the summer are travel posts, city guides or even just photo diaries. They provide inspiration and escapism in the bucket loads and I just love the variety it brings to my favourite blogs (including my own), seeing holiday outfits, restaurant guides and generally just beautiful photos for some serious escapism.

I don’t think i’m the only one that loves to read travel blogs & photo diaries, so make the most of your holidays and breaks away by sharing your photos, providing tips and ideas for things to do in case other people are visiting too.

Holidays and travel provide some really great opportunities for rich, new and original content. So make the most of it.

    #4 FASHION WEEK WARM UP

Of course summer is the warm up to Fashion Week, and so as we work our way towards September, we can start to warm our blog up for the occasion too. Whether it’s Fashion Week guides, style picks or your own preparation, there’s always so much hype towards fashion week, so accept the lull before the storm, but be ready for when that buzz kicks off.

If you plan it well, hopefully you’re content will capture tons of interest as blogging ‘hypes’ up again.

    #5 MAXIMISE SOCIAL

Perhaps my biggest tip, alongside planning ahead, for blogging this summer is maximise your social channels. Whether it’s sharing your adventures on instagram and twitter, keeping your Facebook updated with new content or even sharing vlogs or snapchats of your goings on … people love it. With summer limiting our time to sit and read a big long post, social offers that bite size opportunity to keep up to date but whilst we’re on the go.

I for one am obsessed with Instagram this summer, following my favourite bloggers summer adventures, and in turn sharing daily snippets of my summer too. You can follow along here if you’re not already.

Mediamarmalade Blog TipsSo there you have it, 5 simple ways to keep your blog flowing this summer and adapting your blog schedule to fit the summer mood.

I’d love to hear your tips and advice too, how do you run your blog and your blog schedule during the summer?

  • WHAT IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT?

WHAT IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT?

Mediamarmalade What If Money Was No Object

. WHAT IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT? .

Today my friend sent me this video to watch (I urge you to watch it too), a little inspiration and motivation to live out our lives more happily. The inspiration was mostly triggered by the fact we’re often  feeling seriously over worked, under pressure and as a result super stressed and unhappy … Things go round in circles, but more often than not we find ourselves having lost our work life balance, re-evaluating what we’re doing and wishing we could be living out our wildest dreams instead.

Health and happiness are far more important than work. But that strive for success, progression, achievement keeps us slogging away fighting for opportunity and reward.

But what if money was no object? What if we all put our happiness, our health and our passions first? What if …

If money was no object. I’d be CEO and editor in chief of ️mediamarmalade.com FULL TIME, creating the best content I can for my readers and for brands in turn, I’d get myself a puppy immediately, I’d spend time enjoying the outside getting inspired and taking more photos than my memory card can handle, I may even become a photographer on the side, alongside my freelance communications strategy consultancy business of course … But all on my terms, by my rules, because it’s my life. I’d probably live near the sea, because the sea makes me happy. And i’d never let my stress levels get so high they make me poorly. I’d travel as much as I could, skiing, summer holidays, city breaks, last minute adventures at every opportunity … holidays are one of my favourite things, there’s nothing better than exploring new cultures, soaking up the sunshine, and taking some time out to focus on fun, food and family and friends, i’d do this more, more often and visit more places. And the best thing of all is, the richness of my experiences, the inspiration gained and the photos taken on my travels, they would all feed back into my little enterprise mediamarmalade.com, making it all the more inspiring and enjoyable for you guys to read, and hopefully more people too.

In reality all of this is 100% possible, and actually 100% what i am working towards already. But the thing is, to live the life I love, and am accustomed to, to holiday all year round and spend my days blogging, writing and taking photos, looking after a puppy and living out my dreams … well it does require money. Sadly nothing in life is free, rent needs paying, travel needs funding and most things in life comes with a fee … so it’s all about balance.

    Work life balance.

Balancing what makes you happy, with working to fund your living, but what Alan Watts says is true … they don’t have to be mutually exclusive. If you do what you love, then you’re passion, determination and motivation will make it succeed, a better balance is achieved because you’re doing what you love, always.

For me the key is to acknowledge that happiness and health comes first, and inclusive of this, for me, is my passions and my loves, – my blog, my friends and family, the seaside, a puppy, holidays. If I spend enough time focussing on these things, life overall will be more happy, less stressed and all the more positive. Equally if I spend more time on my blog, taking photos and being inspired, then hopefully this little piece of the web will become something a little more, something so successful I am able to do it full time, AND maintain the standard of living i’m used to.

“What the devil is the point of surviving, going on living, when it’s a drag? But you see, that’s what people do.” Alan Watts

Here’s to living our dreams. What would you do if money was no object?
