    . BRAVING DOUBLE DENIM .

At one point I thought double denim should only be reserved for Justin and Britney, and even then it was in an ironic almost comical manor, and then the resurgence of double denim hit Fashion Week in AW14 and my opinion started to shift. Gone were the acid wash clashing garments, and in replace was chic classic denim shirts tucked into this seasons favourite the denim mini, or even better a cut off skinny with lace up heels. The look was everywhere, and like most of unsuspecting humanity, I kinda got bought along in the trend, and before I knew it, I too was rocking the look.

Since then I’ve learnt to accept denim on denim, and if anything embrace it. I now adore the double d look and find myself pinning stunning street style looks like nobodies business. More than that, actually sporting my favourite combinations too, and todays outfit is case in point, classic denim mom jeans with a vintage style white denim jacket. I love the double hit of contrasting colours and double denim textures, and the black accessories complete the look without any overkill.

Following yesterday’s post about how to banish your stress (if you haven’t read it yet, grab a cuppa and pop on over and give it a read), i’m trying to take my own advice, keep calm and relax. I’m starting with tackling my ever building list of things to do, one step at a time … deep breathe, and here I go.

Have you embraced the double denim resurgence yet? What are your thoughts?

. HOW TO BANISH YOUR STRESS & WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT .

This post is actually probably more of a self help post than anything to be really honest, but if you’re anything like me then you’ll frequently suffer from stressful episodes. Usually driven by work and career pressures, but ultimately regardless of where the stress comes from, the fact of the matter is you get ill & find yourself stuck in a situation of total exhaustion which not only affects your mental health, but also your physical health too.

We all know that to be so stressed that you get ill, migraines, sickness, exhaustion etc, is absolutely horrendous, unnecessary and most of all unhealthy, but it’s often hard to banish the stress, especially when you’re struggling through an unbelievably stressful period.

But today I wanted to take a moment to address why it really is so important to get rid of it, and a few little tips as to how you can help yourself through stressful times, and how to banish your stress all together.

    mediamarmalade how to banish stress

. 5 WAYS TO BANISH YOUR STRESSES .

    #1 SAY NO

Firstly, when we think about stressful times, more often than not you are stressed because you are juggling too much, whether it’s too many work projects and deliverables, or quite simply too many things generally in life. As a driven person, I often find myself feeling under pressure, stressed and exhausted due to the sheer amount I take on, 99% at work, but not least the additional pressures outside of my career such as my blog and a social life.

Sometimes, as much as you don’t want to say NO at risk of not progressing / delivering great work / impressing your boss / being the best you can (insert relevant adjective), actually it ultimately is the best thing to do. Firstly to ensure you don’t break yourself in the process, but secondly because it allows you to focus and deliver 100% on the projects you’ve already taken on. What i’ve found is that often people respect you more in the long run for showing an ability to take leadership, and focus on delivering the best output for the business.

    #2 PLAN A BREAK

Head space is everything. Seriously, when I’m stressed my head is working at 200 mph (hence my constant migraines) and it’s just so hard to think clearly, actually get work done, and generally concentrate on the tasks at hand. Often to actually make progress on your tasks in hand you need to actually take a break, clear your head, and come back with fresh eyes and fresh perspective. Whether or not it’s a 10 minute coffee break and walk outside, or a weeks holiday.

Take a moment to acknowledge how you’re feeling, accept it, and help yourself back to a positive place by giving your head some space, time and calm.

    #3 EXERCISE

One way of clearing your head, and allowing your body to unwind and release all the adrenaline it’s no doubt creating is to just do a little exercise. Not only will it help clear your head & but it’ll also help energise you, and give you a little more ‘buzz’ for when you get back to tackling your to do list.

When i’m busy, I always find excuses to ditch exercise, but in reality keeping fit, drinking lots of water and nourishing my body with goodness are three things that will actually really help me deal with my stress, keep positive and generally be able to handle the situation more easily, especially if you use products like tonic cbd oil too, as products like these have been proven to get rid of stress-related issues.

    #4 TALK IT OUT

There’s nothing better than a good rant when your brain is buzzing with a whirlwind of stressful thoughts, a million things to do, and generally just in a state of panic. Whilst we may think a rant is negative, actually allowing your brain just to free flow and talk it all out will probably help you make sense of things a little better, help you clear your head, and actually make you feel less alone in at all .. you’ve shared the burden a little.

    #5 BREAK THINGS DOWN

Best of all, when you talk it out with friends, colleagues or family (or even to yourself, out loud), you usually solve the problems or stresses yourself. Why not finish a chat, with a fresh to do list, and a clear point of view on how you’ll tackle it. Step by step. One task at a time.

You’ll find yourself feeling less pressure almost immediately. Breaking down the tasks into manageable chunks, with a clear and realistic timing approach to how you’ll deliver it will really help relieve some stress and will make things feel more manageable.

. WHISTLES : TOI MOI NOUS TEE .

So last weekend I bought a new top, I bought it without much thought, but I cannot explain how immediately obsessed i’ve become with it. This little tee was a bargain £18 in the Whistles sale, down from £45. I’m not usually a good sales shopper, i’m the person that splurges on a huge shop and the next day it’s all in the sale (yes, this literally just happened to me), but this tee was such a good find I just couldn’t resist! It’s the perfect loose fit, super cute, grey marl and has french lingo written all over it … it was literally made for me. And i’ve literally worn it about 5 days in a row as a result.

I love it when you find a new item of clothing that you literally can wear with everything, this see is such a versatile number, it looks great with denim cut offs and converse, equally with a suede little skirt and heels like today’s look. It’s one of those investment buys that you’ll get the best CPW (cost per wear) for!

I’ve been in a such a great mood this weekend, spending two whole days with my uni girls laughing and drinking non stop, followed by the most chilled sunday with my family in the sunshine (when I shot this look with my sister). This week is a little ‘back to the grind’ so i’m trying to keep my spirits high & channel my weekend happiness!

Do you have any items of clothing you literally repeat wear constantly?

. WHY I LOVE BRETON – THE CLASSIC STRIPE THAT JUST KEEPS GIVING.

A couple of years ago I rediscovered the breton stripe, partly driven by a trip to Northern France where the breton is of course a classic trend and tourist obsession, but equally by a little UK resurgence too (did you notice it start popping up on the high street too?). The breton top was something I probably hadn’t worn since I was in a baby grow, but now is an item that infiltrates my outfits on a weekly basis.

I can only put this newly re-found love down to two things … firstly, the classic breton top in particular is just such a comfy item of clothing it’s a no brainer when you’re looking for comfort and cosiness, it offers a really easy trick to ‘down play’ a look for a more ‘everyday’ styling (aka: Todays outfit). Secondly, and probably the more pertinent pro, is that the breton stripe is a classic, a trend that doesn’t age and actually as a result goes with most things, making it an easy styling win & a ‘safe’ wardrobe essential!

Teaming one of my many breton tops with my favourite new season purchases is one of my most styled looks, and this season i’ve been teaming my breton with my favourite skirts, the suede skirt & of course my denim A line skirt too. This weekend I popped on this french breton number with my Zara button down skirt and my usual accessories. The breton dresses the mini skirt down perfectly, making it appropriate for that more everyday weekend wear.

Are you a breton top love like moi or do you reserve the trend for babies only?

    . THIS WEEKEND & MY SOULMATES .

This weekend I spent some serious quality time with my girls in London, before one of my most best and dearest friends moves away for an adventure in Hong Kong for a couple of years. I’m so proud of her for living her dreams, but sad to see my soulmate relocate a few hundred thousand miles away. Of course i’ll be planning  a little vacay to see her asap, but the occasion did give us an excuse to have a girly weekend and dedicate some time having a little love in (post our Turkey LOL’s). In our true fashion it was 99% laughter and as always I have a million new memories to keep me smiling everyday remembering what we got up to. We have each other in stitches at all times and genuinely just have so much love for each other.

After a very tearful goodbye this afternoon, I headed back to Kew and threw a little summer siesta barbecue for all my family and of course little Ruby who came to visit. All in all, the perfect weekend. For once I don’t have the Sunday blues, thats friends & family for you!!

Did you all have a great weekend? What have you been up to?

. 5 WAYS THAT YOU CAN GET MORE HAPPY. RIGHT NOW .

Happiness is one of those emotions and ‘things’ that when you’ve got it, its euphoria, it’s what makes the world go round and what makes life so enjoyable. For me it also goes hand in hand with love, most the time when i’m at my happiest i’m with my loved ones and doing the things I love. For many happiness comes easily, which is fantastic, but for us all, on some days, some weeks or even some years, happiness can be a little harder to grab hold of and embrace, especially when life around us is making it a little more tricky to keep positive, have fun and be happy.

i’m clearly no happiness guru, but I like to think i’m quite aware of my ‘wellbeing’ and my happiness, positivity and also my weaknesses that can bring all these things down, i’ve read a lot of books, had a lot of experiences and even had some training which has helped too, so today I thought i’d share my top 5 tips for getting more happy … little things that if you spend a little effort thinking about them and working on them, hopefully will help you have a little more happy time too!

    MEDIAMARMALADE_HARRIETTS_21ST-76

. HOW TO BE MORE HAPPY, 5 SIMPLE TIPS .

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” Dalai Lama

    #1 LISTEN TO YOUR CAVEMAN

okay, so we all have a caveman, the caveman is that little person in our brain who likes to talk to us. A LOT. The caveman especially likes to have a chat when things are starting to go wrong, maybe we’re in a situation that the caveman thinks is a threatening one, or a concerning one. In these situations the caveman likes to protect you … tell you to run, get out, hide, back away, shelter. In reality this is your fight or flight protection … it’s great sometimes (when you see a fire, you run for example), but often if left alone for too long the caveman can start to make everyday tasks into a threat (you shouldn’t be seen looking that fat, you can’t wear that people will think you are an awful person, you can’t do that at work, you’re not good enough – you know the jist). These little things our caveman is doing are only meant to help us, but you know in this day n age, we don’t need that caveman as much as we used to … and so to avoid overwhelming amounts of worry, anxst, and negativity, sometimes we just need to give our caveman a little talking to. Listen to the worries, but reassure the caveman with realism, confidence and assurance. Once you’ve learnt to deal with your caveman a few times, you’ll realise your able to be in a more positive, and happy place more often, and spending less time feeling anxious or worried.

In simple terms, accept your sadness and your negative emotions, but address them, pick yourself up, sort yourself up and get on with life.

    #2 GET OUT

One simple and really easy way to boost your happiness is just by getting out, whether thats out with friends, out on a walk to the shops or just out and sitting in the garden. It’s amazing how taking a moment to absorb your surroundings, get a boost of vitamin D and simply just getting out the house can transform your mood. For me going to the beach is a sure fire way to make me happy, just the sea, sand and fun memories immediately bring me to a happy place.

#3 SPEND MORE TIME ON ‘YOU’

We spend so much time thinking of others, whether that’s our boss, our family, our friends, our clients … anyone and everyone. And whilst it’s lovely to always think of others, sometimes by only thinking about others you can just forget about you. What it is you love, what it is you enjoy, what it is that makes you happy. We often don’t even realise it, until one day we just feel fed up, under pressure and just exhausted from trying to please everyone and do everything we think people want … sometimes you simply need to take a step back and think about you. Spend more time on YOU! That doesn’t mean forgetting everyone else, but why not suggest doing something you find enjoyable, or saying No to that work project, because actually you already had plans. However big or small, just spending a little more time focussing on you, ‘me time’, and what makes you happy will immediately transform things.

    #4 BE HEALTHY

Healthy eating, healthy living and healthy mental attitude. These three things are proven to boost happiness, and we all know it really, but often we just neglect health for some short term fun, but looking after your wellbeing and health will help to keep you happier in the long run … feeding yourself the right things, keeping active to get those endorphins flowing and just making sure your mentally in a positive place (refer to point 1) will help you lead a much happier life.

#5 HAVE A DREAM, AND GO GET IT

Finally, dream, dream big, and don’t just dream, do it. We often spend so much of our time wishing for things to happen, hoping things will change, dreaming of that career, that home, that holiday we want. But nothing happens without you going out and getting it … so if you truly want to feel happy, you have to be happy in the NOW, not in the future and not in the past, the NOW, and so there’s no use in having dreams of the future, you need to working towards those dreams right now. No matter how big or small it is … accept it, work towards it, and celebrate it when you achieve it.

You’ll find that living in the present, and working towards something you want to achieve will transform your happiness more than you could imagine. Happiness is yours for the taking!

“Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door. ” Coco Chanel

Mixing colours and textures is something i’m forever trying out, most the time undeliberately, and more often than not unsuccessfully too – the amount of times my sister or Jase has to tell me my outfit doesn’t go is embarrassing given I write a personal style blog. . HOLIDAY STYLE, BACK HOME – WORKING YOUR WARDROBE FAVOURITES ALL YEAR .

On holiday, that underdressed sense of style is welcome, bikini’s on show, open backs to showcase your kissed skin, even crop tops if you’re really feeling brave. But embracing that underdressed style back in the UK often feels a little awkward, a little inappropriate or even somewhat ‘tacky’ if not done well. There’s a fine balance between showing a little skin, and looking like you’re in your underwear, but if you get it right then you can look demure, chic, sexy in that undressed Parisian way. I for one, am certainly not au fait with this style of dressing, partly driven by self doubt at not being a bean stalk, but also partly driven by what suits me and what doesn’t, but regardless of this, I decided to embrace a little bit of my holiday style and wardrobe into my UK ensembles this week … with this slightly oversized and undressed playsuit from Fifth Label, it’s the perfect mix of summer holiday style with UK appropriate modesty (just)!

I wore this playsuit at the weekend after it had been hidden away in my wardrobe since last Summer, it’s a fab holiday number, open back, totally light weight and unbelievably comfy, but with it’s cons, comes it’s pros, in that it is super flimsy and if not kept in position, rather revealing. Nonetheless, I love it, and so wanted to style it up for a little weekend wear! I teamed it with a simple denim jacket (giving the overall attire a little modesty), kept things understated on the foot & just finished off with my favourite weekend accessories (my fedora & an easy shoulder bag – in this case my Aspinal buckle bag). Overall it worked quite well, I kept covered enough to not get concerned stares in the street, but actually got to wear the playsuit which I really love but have previously kept for holidays abroad.  It seems as though underdressed can work for the everyday, so long as you accessorise cleverly.

How do you adapt your holiday style and wardrobe, for suitable wear when you’re back home?

5 WAYS TO GET YOUR BLOGGING MOJO BACK

    Mediamarmalade Blogging

. HOW TO GET RE-MOTIVATED & INSPIRED WHEN YOUR BLOGGING MOJO’S GONE .

Blogging is a whole lot of fun, but there’s no denying it’s also a serious amount of work too. Whilst we all probably started our blogs because of our passion for a subject, our love for photography, writing or simply clothes, and 99% of the time absolutely love blogging … there’s naturally times where our enthusiasm and motivation drops, and our blogging mojo simply goes.

First of all … don’t fear. This happens to most people and is only natural when you put so much time and effort into blogging, there will of course be times when you’re tired, have stretched your imagination to it’s limits and are struggling to think up new, exciting and original ideas. And what comes with experience in the matter, is also a few little tips and tricks for getting your mojo back in action too. So today I thought i’d share my 5 tips for getting your blogging mojo back, for times when you’re feeling a little uninspired & uninterested.

    Mediamarmalade Blogging

. 5 WAYS TO GET YOUR BLOGGING MOJO BACK .

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” Albert Einstein

    #1 GET INSPIRED

If ever I find myself feeling de-motivated or a little out of blogging ideas, I know the best way to get my inspiration back is to simply spend some time getting inspired by all the stimulus at my disposal. Whether that’s reading my favourite magazines, spending times reading blogs and catching up on my favourite bloggers or even searching out new blogs to read, strolling through Pinterest and pinning the most beautiful images, or even just reading back through my own blog to re-inspire myself through my own work, all these techniques really help get my brain excited, inspired and thinking about what I want to write about next.

You can seek inspiration from anything, as long as your relaxed and feeling positive. The worst thing you can do though, is force yourself to feel inspired and put yourself under pressure. Our subconscious brain (our creative friend) doesn’t quite work like that, so first things first, relax, unwind & drop the pressure.

    #2 TAKE A BREAK

And the best way to do that, is of course by taking a break. If you’re struggling to get inspired, or feeling a little unmotivated, often the best thing to do is to accept this and simply take a break. More often than not just by letting yourself breathe and by dropping the pressure, you’re mind will naturally start whirling into creative action and you’ll find ideas start flowing in no time at all.

I know often we strive for consistency when blogging, fear missing a day or not providing readers with something new (this is my biggest grapple), but in reality this is an internal pressure, and your readers aren’t just going to stop coming back simply because you blogger 5 hours late, missed a day, or ditched the blog for a week because you were too busy having fun. When you finally get back to blogging, you’ll probably find yourself brimming with inspiration and motivation to get sharing again.

    #3 SEEK ADVICE

Feeling stuck on what to write? Ask your readers what they want. Ask your friends and family for their ideas. Check out google trends. Ask other bloggers for their advice.

Theres nothing wrong with seeking advice every now and then, tons of bloggers these days ask their readers and followers what it is they want to read, that way you’re getting tons of inspiration without any effort what so ever, but your readers also feel involved, invested in your blog, and will end up with the content they’re interested in. Win Win.

I often brainstorm my blog ideas and blog content on my own, but every now and then i’ll ask my family, Jase and my sisters for their ideas too. Often the ideas are brilliant as they’re so detached from the deep depths of the blogging world. It’s fresh ideas.

    #4 GET OUTSIDE

This is a personal winner for me, but if i’m ever feeling lost for ideas, de-motivated or simply in a rut, dropping the work and just getting out and about is an easy way for me to get my mojo back. I think getting out helps for a few reasons, firstly you take a break, secondly you get outside where there’s zillions of stimulus to get you inspired, and thirdly if you take your camera on your strolls you’ll end up snapping tons of gorgeous pictures that will no doubt help you with content ideas when you’re back at your desk and working on your blog.

    #5 MAKE A START

Sometimes though, as much as a break and seeking inspiration are the best ways to get your blogging mojo back in gear, just getting started is enough to ignite your passion, imagination and your motivation too. Often i’ll find that putting pen to paper (metaphorically speaking) is enough to get me going, it might be a slow process, and it might take me 10 times as long to write a feature, but in the end i’ll get there, and by the time i’ve finished that one post, i’m buzzing to write the next, motivated to do more, and full of ideas and inspiration for my next content pieces. It’s that whole thing of ‘the first step is the hardest’ …

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Oscar Wilde

Mediamarmalade BloggingThere’s nothing wrong with losing your mojo, feeling uninspired or a little de-motivated, the most important thing is to listen to how you’re feeling, take a break, seek inspiration, get inspired, and have some fun. Before you know it you’ll be oozing with inspiration and desperate to get creating.

Creativity isn’t a competition. So don’t let yourself feel like it is.

I’d love to know if you find these tips helpful, and even more, i’d love to hear your tips for getting your blog mojo flowing when you’re having a little dip?
