    . WARDROBE STAPLES : BRETON & DENIM .

British summer may flip 180 day by day, but even on days where the sun hides away, humidity is still there to make you sweat, and so opting for a few classic summer wardrobe staples is always a good move in July. My wardrobe staples are just what they say on the tin, staples … we’re talking vintage levis, the classic breton & of course the ugliest shoe of all, the birkenstock. It’s a classic summer combination and an easy win for British summer.

When I get a lazy day, you know, the sort of days where wondering the streets, grabbing an ice coffee and embarking on an impromptu 3pm brunch, this is always my go to attire. Theres nothing more comfy, effortless but innately british about the look … the only thing you need to finish the look off is the Cornish seaside, some fish n chips & a local cider to boot. Right?

Whats your go to ‘everyday’ summer wear?

. WEST LONDON STYLE : NOTTING HILL .

Yesterday Jase and I spent the day in Nottinghill, a favourite spot of ours for the weekend, especially for a leisurely stroll, a super tasty brunch and a spot of Window shopping. Nottinghill is one of my favourite things about being a West Londoner, whilst of course it can be a tourist haven, there’s so much to see and do just a stones throw from Portabello, away from the hustle and bustle, and it’s the home of some of my favourite restaurants too. Jase and I took a little stroll along Westbourne Grove and grabbed a very late brunch in Granger & Co (a real fave of mine) before heading home for Sunday night movie night. The perfect wind down after a hectic week.

The weather dropped a bit post Saturday’s heatwave and so I took the opportunity to give my MOM jeans (mans most hated item) a little wear as they’ve been hidden away for the last month or so. I teamed them with my (probably now infamous) Zara kimono & my favourite summer shoe … the birkenstock. Totally relaxed and just the right attire for a grey British Sunday.

Where do you sit on the MOM jeans debate … are you a lover or a hater?

. A RATHER BRITISH SUMMER DAY OUT AT ASCOT .

Yesterday Jase and I headed to Ascot with friends for a day full of champers, sunshine, picnics & summer frocks. I’m not sure what more you could want for the perfect British summer day out. I made the most of the occasion and gave my new Reiss dress a little debut, and we spent the day enjoying the races (winning on all but one race too), popping too many bottles of fizz and lapping up the sunshine that graced us for the day. Perfection.

I’m glad we made the most of the sunshine yesterday because in true British summer fashion, today we’re back to grey skies and wooly jumpers … the only way to recover from yesterdays summer fun is to embrace the cold, wrap up warm and hit the Electric House for a cosy brunch, a bloody mary and some blog reading. And that’s just what i’ll be doing.

What have you been up to this weekend? What do you think of this british summer time photo diary post from my day at ASCOT?

    . WHAT MAKES A BLOG GOOD .

As a blogger and a perfectionist, i’m constantly striving to make my blog the best it could possibly be, but the beautiful thing about blogging is that it’s so subjective and so unique, that there’s no one answer or solution to ‘the perfect blog’. And so there shouldn’t be.

But as i’m always trying to make mediamarmalade into something you guys will love and want to visit and enjoy reading, i’m always asking myself what would make a good post, what experience would make my blog a success to you guys, what design would make my blog even better. What makes a blog good?

Naturally there is no answer, of course not, but today I thought i’d share my thoughts on what makes a good blog, and the things i’m trying to create on mediamarmalade so you think it’s great, and the things i think other bloggers do incredibly well with. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic too, it’s so broad that it would be great to hear other opinions.

    . 5 THINGS THAT I THINK MAKE A BLOG ‘GREAT’ .

    #1 BEAUITFUL PHOTOGRAPHY

Firstly I think photography has to be one of the most important things in swaying my opinion to a blog being okay of just incredible. Not just the quality of the imagery, but the imagination and uniqueness of the photographs, the style of imagery, the colours, the setting, the composition. There are so many things that go into taking a good photograph, but i think most important is personality. A photo should capture a moment, excite or engage your audience, tell a 1000 words and just generally bring to life the editorial. Some of my favourite blogs to read are those who have beautiful photography.

Some things I want to try and include more on my own blog photography wise are, multiple locations, more ‘out and about’ style posts and imagery as these really bring to life a feature more, unique and original compositions and angles & of course lots of movement and energy. My photography is something I love the most, and so it’s the one area of my blog i’m always trying to improve on.

If you’re interested in learning more about photography, i’ve written lots of photography tips posts, including how to master your DSLR, my top 5 photography tips, how to take great blog pictures & recently how to take great pictures in the summer.

    #2 PERSONALITY & A UNIQUE IDENTITY

A great blog is one where you get to know the blogger, a blog with personality, a unique style, an identity, some integrity. My favourite bloggers and blogs are those that just ooze personality. I know immediately who they are, because they let themselves shine through in everything they do. From the editorial style and tone, the imagery and even blog design too.

I think in this day of blogging, where there are just so many blogs out there, people try and copy, mimic and replicate other success stories, but for me that’s a sure fire way not to succeed. The reason blogging is so incredible and so successful is because of the genuine, unique and personable nature of the content. A blog is brilliant because of YOU.

    #3 CHIC & EASY DESIGN

I’m a sucker for design. I can’t help it but a clean, neat and unique design is something that I really like in a blog. There’s absolutely no right or wrong in how a blog should be designed, it should simply reflect you, your blog content and your style and personality. Lately I feel as though you get a lot of ‘copied’ or replicated design formulas, but i think it’s really important to strive for something unique, something you yourself have designed and love and something specific that easily identifies your blog. There’s no point copying what others are doing, it defeats the point of blogging in the first place.

I focus a lot on my design and am continuously adding and updating things on my blog to make the design look more chic and more in style with where i want this to go. It’s a big step away from where it was 4 years ago, but i love the style, the navigation the focus on imagery and the general clean vibe my blog has. I spent a lot of time designing every detail and meticulously briefing a coder to help me bring it all to life – the more you can do yourself the more ‘you’ it will be (i actually designed and built my old site all myself, but this update is a little more snazzy and so i needed a helping hand).

    #4 ORIGINAL CONTENT

Alongside bringing out your personality in your features, actually working on developing new, exciting and original content is another thing that makes a blog great in my opinion. I always try and keep things fresh on my blog, even more so now than in previous years, trying to bring new content that I like writing about and hope my readers enjoy reading (like my tips post and lifestyle features). I’m always brainstorming new ideas and new content pieces to keep my blog interesting, and helpful to my readers, but also things i am passionate about and want to share on here with you.

My favourite bloggers all have their own unique style, and in turn have original content which is true to their blog, their own identity and their blog ambition.

    #5 SOCIAL & BEYOND

One of the things I love about blogging today, versus 4 years ago, is the increase in social media. Yeah it takes some time and effort to manage more than just the one blog these days, but getting to know bloggers on a more day to day level through Facebook twitter, pinterest and instagram (and even the likes of snapchat which i haven’t converted to yet) is such a great way of getting to know someone beyond the idealic and picturesque content shared on a blog.

I for one really love following my favourite bloggers across all their social platforms, not only is it tons of great content daily, it also keeps me inspired and gives them even more personality! I think spending a little time setting up your ‘brand’ across all your channels is a really great way of adding to the fantastic work we already do on our actual blogs.

    Mediamarmalade BloggingMediamarmalade Blogging

There’s definitely no such thing as the perfect blog, a blog should be unique, personal and original, but for me those 5 things really make me engage and fall in love with a  blog and blogger.

i’d love to hear your thoughts on what makes a good blog and what you personally love to see from a blog? What keeps you coming back to your favourite bloggers?

. FRIDAY STYLE VIBES: SUNNY WEATHER WEAR .

I am so happy it’s Friday. This week has been absolute whirlwind, after two weeks of seaside and relaxation, coming back to the hustle and bustle of london to a tube strike, an absolutely crazy working week and a ball last night to boot, Friday couldn’t have come sooner. I’m so excited to get home tonight, pop on my summer dress, crash out in my garden and get a tasty bbq sizzling away. A chilled evening ahead of a day out at Ascot tomorrow.

This look is my absolute favourite for sunny summer days like today. It’s the comfiest summer smock dress I own, looks fab styled simply with birks or sandals, and ensures you have enough skin out to get a little tan too. I’m wearing this dress today for a little hangover lunch at Tower Bridge in the sunshine, before I head home for a bbq with Jase tonight. I’m feeling a little tired today after attending an industry ball last night and dancing into the early hours, so this is the perfect attire to throw on and not have to overthink.

What are your plans this weekend? How will you be making the most of the sunshine?

    . MY SUMMER STYLE : COLOUR & PRINTS .

Whilst in winter I try my hardest to rock the monochrome look, keeping things simple, black, white and neutral, in the summer my innate love for colour and prints cannot be kept at bay. I adore and admire those that rock monochrome so effortlessly, but for me I think my natural style and personality lends itself to something a little more playful and colourful. And my summer wardrobe always ends up reflecting this.

Given my innate love for colour, i’m always a big fan of brands that also use a spot of vibrancy in their collections and prints, and Oliver Bonas is clearly one such brand. You may have already spotted this look featuring their printed co-ord set, but today I wanted to share another summer favourite, this printed, super vibrant summer shift dress. The colour palette of this dress is exactly what I love, bright blues, warming corals and muted greys, and matches perfectly with my new bright red Radley bag (which by the way you can bag for yourself by entering my giveaway).

For me there’s nothing like adding some colour and vibrancy to an outfit to boost your mood, get in the summer spirit and feel a little more positive about the day ahead.

Are you a colour lover at heart too? What’s your go to summer colour palette?

  • WHY YOU NEED A BREAK

    WHY YOU NEED A BREAK

. WHY YOU NEED A BREAK & HOW TO REALLY TAKE ONE .

As I write this post, I 100% should be taking my own advice, and really stopping and giving myself a break, rather than blogging and pushing myself even further to do more and keep going. But they say taking your own advice is always the hardest?

Often, with lives that run at 100 miles and hour, we can find our body and mind in desperate need of a break more often than we may care to accept. Often this is as a result of us working too hard, pushing our bodies to the limit & not giving ourselves the time to relax, unwind, live well and live healthily. Whether it’s feeling totally exhausted, getting yourself run down, continuously fighting off illness, or suffering with migraines when things get pressurised (like me), I bet i’m not the only one working my body to the grind and burning the candle.

But I also bet, i’m not the only one who appreciates how bad this actually is, and also strives for a better, healthier work, life balance, and knows that keeping yourself healthy and happy both mentally and physically is the key to better work, better productivity, increased positivity, more creativity and better health.

In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision. Dalai Lama

When you’re positive, relaxed and ‘well’, then you will naturally be more ‘you’. When we get run down or stressed, our true personalities can hide away and get lost to stress, panic and anxiety. Clearly this is no good for anyone – not least for you. Being able to stay in state is a key skill that any successful person has, and accepting the importance of it will be pivotal in your own success too.

Naturally the best way to keep state, is to give yourself time to ‘check in’ with yourself, rest up & keep on the ball. So today, I thought i’d share 5 ideas on how to give yourself a break throughout the day.

    Mediamarmalade Blogging

Start by making a small change everyday …

    #1 WALK & TALK

Number one. Not everything has to be done at your desk. In fact, the more you can get away from it the better. One of my favourite tricks from my Creative leadership training course last week, was understanding the value in ‘talking and walking’, not only will you find you end up having seriously productive conversations and probably ending the walk with some real good actions (seriously, its super effective), but it’s also a great way for you to get the blood flowing, getting some fresh air, changing your scenery to get inspired and simply getting away from your desk, your work and even your stresses.

Even a five minute walk could do some serious magic to your mood & positivity.

    #2 EXERCISE

We all know how great exercise is at cleaning your head and helping you relax (let alone getting you fit and healthy) so spending a little effort making time and motivating yourself to get fit, do a little exercise and keep healthy is a really positive step towards improving your well being.

I always have the age old excuse ‘i don’t have enough time’ … but what’s important is making time. Your happiness and health is the most important thing, and exercise is key to it.

    #3 ME TIME

Taking a break with others is great, but actually taking some time out on your own is also good too. We don’t spend enough time just being by ourselves and truly relaxing, and so giving yourself 10 minutes every now and then just to sit, be you, and check ourselves can be really helpful.

Try giving yourself a little me time this week. Whether it’s a 10 minute meditation in the morning before your day kicks off, or just going on a little stroll at lunch time to clear your head, whatever it is and however big or small, putting your phone and computer aside, and just having some time to YOU is a really easy way of giving yourself a break.

    #4 TEA BREAK

There’s a reason people love tea breaks. They are the easiest, quickest and most simple way of adding a 5 minute break to your day, everyday, and genuinely stepping away from your desk and work. So make the most of them. Whether it’s offering to do a tea round, nipping out to get a coffee (and getting some fresh air) or just having a quick chat in the kitchen with colleagues or friends.

Taking a little moment to step away is more valuable than you probably realise. And it goes without saying how taking a proper lunch break can really step change your day – it’s my promise to myself to actually try and take a lunch break everyday from now on.

    #5 SOCIALS

When you think about when you are your happiest, it’s probably when you’re with friends, partners or family. They put a smile on your face, give you stitches from laughing and generally just bring a bundle of joy to your day. They also force you to have a break from all the stresses and pressures at work … so all in all they’re 10/10. So do them more.

Make sure you keep that work life balance by spending time with your favourites. Giggle to your hearts content, let all your worries and pressures fall away, and genuinely enjoy yourself. You’ll feel, happy, refreshed and positive even after 30 minutes with your pals.

If you like me, often find yourself run down and exhausted, then challenge yourself with taking more breaks, giving yourself more time out & getting yourself into a more positive place everyday. You’ll be totally surprised the impact it can make on your life, even just a 10 minute break a couple of times a day.

I’d love to know if you have any tips or advice for taking breaks, or whether you’re feeling inspired to make some small changes to your day & take a little more time out too?

. EFFORTLESS STYLE: DENIM CUT OFFS & BLUE PRINT KIMONO .

One of my favourite things about summer is being effortless, effortless in my plans, effortless in my style and effortless in my effort too. When the sun’s shining and the skies are blue, it just feels so much easier to get dressed in the morning, there’s just less to think about, less to consider, and things come together so much easier. When it’s hot the number one criteria for my sartorial pursuits is comfort and coolness (cool as in, cold cool, not 90’s cool). When you’re principles for dressing become this simple, it’s no hard task throwing something on in the morning.

When the sun is out one of my favourite throw on looks is of course a simple pair of denim cut offs and a classic cami top, spruced up this season with my favorite new Kimono from Zara which just transforms any outfit into a masterpiece without any effort whatsoever. My backpack has also become my trusted companion this summer, it’s a much more comfy way of lugging around your life’s possessions and has done a world of magic in easing my shoulder tension (most likely caused by 10kg handbags).

I spend so much time and effort thinking about the imagery I use on my blog, and I have to say my sister absolutely aced these photo’s she shot this weekend while we were in Winchester. She’s mastered exactly what I love in a photo, from lighting and composition to crops and angles. We’ve become the perfect little duo.

Photography is something i’m always looking to improve on, and at the moment my instagram is my focus. I absolutely love instagram and follow so many fab ‘grammers, each one different and unique, but all have quality photography at the heart. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can step up my instagram even further to create a real consistent theme or vibe … i’ve not quite worked out exactly what i want to create but i love the vibrancy and whiteness of my blog photos, so recreating this on my instagram is my next mission.

I’d love to know what makes you fall in love with an instagram account and who your favourite instagrammers are? Please share your links for me to check out too, and of course don’t forget to pop over and follow my page if you like?
