. 50 SHADES OF PINK : ADDING A SOFT SPRING BLUSH TO MY FALL WARDROBE.

Coming home from holiday is a funny sartorial moment, it’s that balance of dressing in sweltering heat, but the knowledge of imminent wind chill when you step foot on home soil. It’s the ultimate transitional clothing moment, wearing your summer wardrobe, with a few fall additions to ensure you don’t get an immediate. What I do like about the occasion, is that my wardrobe still has that pop of colour to it, whereas when fall fully hits us, I tend to drop some colours opting for more muted tones & navy. But for now … my pink wool cos coat made the ultimate transitional layer, with my panama hat getting one final hoorah before it becomes a decoration for the next 6 months.

Now I’m back in London, and wrapping up for Autumn, I’ve found myself planning a whole new wardrobe, full of soft, muted tones, warm and cosy textures, and long line lengths. Naturally I’m dreaming a little far beyond my means with the infamous Acne shearling jacket in powder pink, but the Phillip Lim mini Pashli in feather has been on my wishlist for over a year and so is a little treat I think I’ll indulge in this Christmas. To me, Love me.  In the meantime, I think I’ve finally found the answer to my backpack dreams with this little Sam Edelman Fifi Backpack.

What are your fall wishlist items?

6 THINGS TO REMEMBER IN AN INTERVIEW

Interviews are a scary and exciting process to embark on. Often we can over think things and get ourselves a little unnecessarily worked up … but interviews aren’t all that bad, in fact they can be fun, interesting and helpful too.

    Mediamarmalade Weekend

Before you walk into your next interview, remember these 6 things:

#1 YOU ARE INTERVIEWING THEM TOO

When it comes to interviews, more often than not people over panic, sweat it out, and feel anxious about the ‘trauma’ they are about to experience. This is mislead … yes an interview is a very important opportunity for you to showcase the best of you, your abilities and your passion (and therefore prep and top behaviour is key), but you aren’t the only interviewee in the room. The company and interviewer are also under interview and judgment … by you.

So when you’re prepping or going in for an interview, remember to prepare questions for the,, remember to gauge how you feel about the people, the team, the role and the culture, give feedback (if necessary) on your experience and first impressions to the recruiter or HR team.

Remembering this instantly helps relax you a little too.

    #2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT

First impressions count, so plan ahead, be punctual, dress appropriately and show your best. If you rock up in trainers and a tee, then you don’t look very serious about the opportunity or the business, but if you show up with your CV (and portfolio if you have one) on you, a smart outfit and a well groomed appearance than you’ll definitely leave a good impression.

    #3 KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

I truly believe this. The more you know, the more prepared you are, and the more informed you feel, the more confident, relaxed and ready you will feel, look and sound. Even spending one hour researching the role, the company and the people will leave you feeling far more ‘in the know’ and prepared than if you didn’t.

Understanding what you’re interviewing for, what the business is looking for, and what the type of candidate they want to hire is essential information to help you prepare.

    #4 YOU ARE BRILLIANT

Yes you’re being interviewed, but you are brilliant, you are capable, able and passionate. You are an asset they need, they want and they need to hire. Having a little confidence can go along way in an interview … and If you’re trying to make someone believe in you, you have to believe in your self first.

    # 5 COMFORT IS KEY

Don’t ever dress for an interview in something you feel uncomfortable in, or cannot walk in. it’s simply not worth it. Dress smart, but dress like you. Don’t over do it, or over think it … simple, chic and smart is all you need to do, and I’m sure most of us dress that way anyway. If you feel uncomfortable, you’ll come across uncomfortable. So don’t risk it.

    #6 IT’S GOOD PRACTICE

This is actually one of the best pieces of advice I’ve been given, understanding that an interview is important, but actually if you don’t get the role the it’s just great practice, is such a good mentality to have in the back of your mind.

If you don’t get the job, that’s fine, you can take learning’s and improve so you can do a better job next time. Not only that, the more interviews you do, the more used to them you get, the less daunted you feel and the more confident you come.

    MEDIAMARMALADE_SUNDAY-12

So yes your nervous because you want the job. But just go for it, because if worst comes to worst, it was just great practice for the next one!

. BACK TO FALL : SWAPPING IN MY AUTUMN FAVOURITES .

And just like that, summer has gone and winter is fast approaching. But before that, Autumn. I love autumn, in fact it’s always a time of year that makes me feel a little happy, whether it’s the crisp skies, the colourful fall leaves or the bubbling of that festive feeling which starts to creep in as the nights draw in and Halloween and Bonfire night approach. Or maybe it’s that actually fall style might be my favourite of all the seasons, the opportunity for layering, the cosy knit jumper but still the opportunity to pull together a look that’s more than just an outer layer (because we all know in winter, that’s what makes an outfit). Your modesty is maintained in sensible lengths and covered up arms and legs, and all in all I end up feeling far more comfortable and at one with myself.

The other thing about Autumn style that I do really love, is the opportunity to mix trends, seasonal styles and cuts together to create a somewhat more interesting ensemble. In this look my last season leather mini skirt & cos jumper, teamed with this season midi camel sleeveless coat and my new sock boots from Topshop. I love the opportunity to bring my favourite pieces together, to mix things up and layer a look together.

Whats your favourite style season? Are you a fan of fall style?

. THE LAST OF SUMMER STYLE : A FINAL HOORAH .

So here it is, the final summer look until 2016 (unless a surprise trip comes my way between now and then … offers welcome). My favourite thing about holiday and summer dressing is how basic it can be … whilst I love winter layering and pulling a look together, in summer it’s simply a case of throwing something on. And that’s quite literally it. This white knit dress was something I picked up from Zara really early on in the season, but never really got the chance to wear that much (it’s quite a funny cut and shape if I’m honest), but for my final day in Turkey, when the sun was beginning to retreat, it was the perfect, warm throw on to pop on top of my bikini.

But for now I’m packing my summer clobber away, and swapping knit dresses for cosy knit jumpers, bare legs for thick tights and bare feet for suede ankle boots. I’m sad to see summer pass, but equally ready for a little festivities and winter dressing.

Have you embraced your winter wardrobe yet?

    THE END OF SUMMER

. THE END OF SUMMER : MUSINGS .

Summer has been gone quicker than I ever remember it before. Perhaps it was the 14 hour days at work, and lack of daylight hours I got to enjoy, perhaps it was just a chilly summer, but either way, when my holiday to Turkey finally arrived last week, I couldn’t have been more in need of a rest, some sunshine and an opportunity to catch up on my sleep. A little R&R time for myself, to feel human again. As always with these types of breaks away, I spent my days reading all my favourite authors new novels which I had been piling up awaiting time to read them (I thoroughly recommend Jojo Moyes After You & The Girl You Left Behind – brilliant reads), sleeping like a baby at night after a hearty turkish dinner, and enjoying the oozing serotonin and sunshine in the days … until the sun set and it was time to grab a little cocktail, wrap up warm and watch another day shrink away.

    Mediamarmalade

Aside from catching up on some well needed rest, I also took the opportunity to shoot some looks for my blog, brain storm ideas & spend a little time plotting and planning what’s next for mediamarmalade.com … simple things that have been such a struggle to manage over the last few months.

As well as my three outfit posts which I shared last week (catch them here, here & here if you missed them), I also shot another final beach look on the last day which I’ll be sharing tomorrow. But after this it’s fair to say summer is over … it’s time to pack up my bikinis, my denim cut offs & my much loved panama, and begin unpacking cosy knits, the dreaded tights & my new winter ankle boots for the chillier climates to come.

    MediamarmaladeMediamarmalade

Whilst i’m sad to see summer pass, I’ve got a few more travels in the pipeline to look forward to, a little trip to Norway next month and a rather exciting break in New York in December … it’ll be my fourth trip to the city, and it continues to be my favourite city. I can’t wait to return, to indulge in the last of Black Friday bargains, visit my favourite haunts, make base at Soho House New York, and venture across the water to Brooklyn & Williamsburg for the first time.

I’ll miss the sunshine and beautiful lit skies of turkey, but am already making the most of the warm autumnal sunshine (one of my favourite lightings to shoot blog photos in) and looking forward to Halloween and the festive period to kick in, to decorate the tree & wrap up for cosy Christmas market strolls, and eat too many Bratwursts and mulled wines on the way … as usual.

I do love winter really …

  • HOW TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT

    HOW TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT

    MEDIAMARMALADE_SHIRT_DRESS-35

. HOW TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT: 5 TIPS TO BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE EVERYDAY .

Confidence is a funny old thing, it’s one of those personality traits that typically people either have or they don’t, like extrovert and introverts, but even the most confident of people despite the exterior, can have moments of self doubt, suffer from anxiety or feel awkward in certain situations. Confidence of course is something you can’t force, but there are definitely some little tricks and trips that you can do everyday to help build your confidence, change your attitude from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’, and help you feel a little more empowered to take on the world one day at a time.

Confidence doesn’t just make you feel more comfortable and empowered, it also is visible to others too … the more confident you feel, naturally the more confident you will look, and in turn that’ll no doubt bring you far more opportunities than if you were to shy away through a lack of self confidence. So it’s about time we all paid a little attention to ourselves, and our confidence levels, and put a little energy into bringing ourselves up & empowering ourselves to have a little more self assurance … confidence.

    MEDIAMARMALADE_SHIRT_DRESS-38

. 5 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR SELF ASSURANCE, FEEL MORE EMPOWERED & BECOME MORE  CONFIDENT .

    #1 EVERYDAY CELEBRATION

In my opinion confidence can be built through doing and achieving, setting out to work on something and seeing yourself succeed and learn as you go. Even simple tasks like completing a 5k run (I say simple, but that would be a big challenge for me) can boost your confidence. But the important facto is in celebrating these acts and successes … so many of us shy away from celebrating our hard work and achievements through either a lack of self confidence or because they’re shy to show off (‘oh, it’s nothing’), but actually being sure to celebrate yourself everyday is really brilliant way of gradually boosting your confidence. It can be a personal little goal you give yourself, to everyday say ‘well done’ to yourself for something you’ve achieved, no matter how big or small.

For the bigger achievements like promotions, business successes or life wins … go all out, treat yourself to a nice reward. Hard work pays off, and so be sure to celebrate how much you’ve done, it’ll only make you feel more confident and empowered to do it again in the future.

    #2 ‘I CAN’

One thing I learnt at quite a young age was the importance of saying ‘I can’ rather than ‘I can’t’ … I only really proved to myself that I could do something when I passed and excelled in my GCSE’s all those years ago, before that point I genuinely believed I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t good enough, I could never achieve X,Y,Z. As much as I hated my dad for always saying ‘YOU CAN’ … he was right. And actually that simple mental adjustment from doubting your ability, to just giving it your best shot is one of the most impactful things you can do in boosting your confidence. The more you do, the more you’ll grow, and that’ll just keep reinforcing all those achievements, and in turn your confidence.

In fact, even saying ‘YES’ rather than ‘NO’ all the time can help too! It opens you up to opportunities, people & self confidence.

    #3 KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Whenever I feel unconfident, or a little self doubt creeps in, I realise it’s a sign that i’m not prepared enough as I could be. Confidence comes from knowing, experience & trust (in yourself and the tasks in hand). So whenever I feel myself a little unsure, especially for situations like interviews, exams, pitches etc, I just dedicate some serious effort and time to preparing, building up my knowledge, making myself feel comfortable that I know what I need to … and before long you realise that with that knowledge comes power and confidence.

Whenever you feel a little self doubt, work out why, and work our what you can do to make yourself feel that  little bit more comfortable, and confident.

    #4 LIPSTICK

This is a silly one, but such an easy trick that I couldn’t not share. You know those times, whether it be social or work situations, where you have to show up and you feel nervous or a little self conscious … just pop on your favourite red lip and within a swipe of your lips you’ll have an instant boost of confidence. I’m sure there must be some science behind it, but for me, a little lip stick goes a long way into making me feel confident and in control. It’s a simple trick that works wonders, the same as a power suit (another favourite trick of mine to boost my confidence before a big meeting … dressing the part makes you feel the part).

    #5 BE COMFORTABLE

As much as power dressing is a tactic I love and think works wonders, the more important tip is to be comfortable. Feeling comfortable not only in your own skin, but your own clothes. We’ve all been there where we’ve dressed up to try and fit an occasion or to make us feel better about ourselves, but how many times have you been to a party and spend the whole event pulling down your skirt or rubbing your feet because you simple don’t feel comfortable. TONS right? Well a really easy way to feel more confident, is to make sure you feel more comfortable.

Work out the things that make you feel relaxed and comfortable, style yourself in your way, and don’t feel pressurised into becoming someone you’re not. Confident people show up as themselves, without feeling the need to impress or pretend to be someone else. Take a few tips from their book and you’ll instantly feel more relaxed and confident yourself too.

Confidence isn’t easy, even those of us who feel confident in ourselves and situations will have been through times of self doubt and anxiety … but it’s in helping yourself and making yourself feel more empowered and comfortable that you’ll begin to see your confidence boost and feel more confident in turn.

What do you think of these 5 little tips, will you be trying them out?

Needless to say styling the trousers was a learning curve, because I mean, since when has wearing striped trousers like this been cool. But actually the simplicity of a quality light tee and my ever faithful birkenstocks was actually all it needed for this late summer heat and holiday occasion.

I’ve always been intrigued by the 70’s as I said, probably in a negative way, not quite loving those hipster style icons or trends, but dare I say it, I seem to embracing the resurgence quite openly this season … from my suede obsession, my cropped leg trousers & now this on point 70’s colour palette & printed design. Maybe i am a secret 70’s fan after all (I’m going to blame Chloe)?

Styled so impeccably that to walk out in public would garner street style snaps, opposed to concerned looks from neighbours questioning your mental stability for parading the streets near naked. It’s one of those looks that in photos, just looks so on point, but in reality walking outside in an XXL white shirt, trying to look chic, just doesn’t seem to quite have the same affect. • 5 TIMES WHEN YOU KNOW IT’S TIME TO TAKE A BREAK

5 TIMES WHEN YOU KNOW IT’S TIME TO TAKE A BREAK

    MEDIAMARMALADE_TIPS-1

. 5 TIMES WHEN YOU KNOW IT’S TIME TO TAKE A BREAK .

Life is busy right? As a career driven, social lover, and family bod … I can often find myself running from a to b to c, back to b, back to c, then to a, more often than not. Either that or chained to my desk without a single glimpse of daylight, for far too long. Whether it’s a jam-packed schedule, a crazy workload or simply exhaustion from too much fun, there’s always times when you just know it’s time to take a break. Here are 5 of those moments …

    MEDIAMARMALADE_BABINGTON_HOUSE-141

#1 YOU NEED SLEEP. BUT CAN’T.

I have fortunately never suffered with insomnia, and thank god, because the thought of no sleep genuinely sends fear into my body. You see I am the type of person that without enough sleep … I get sick. I mean I’ve actually been sick at the airport having to get up too early for a business flight. Genuinely. Anything pre 7am is not for me & luckily as soon as I hit the pillow I’m off in la la land (it’s actually quite amazing how fast I fall asleep).

But not everyone is that lucky, I know loads of people that as soon as their stress levels peak or they feel pressure at work, they simply can’t sleep for love or money, they simply cannot sleep. At this moment … you know you need to take some time out.

#2 COFFEE IS ALL YOU DRINK

We all go through times in life where coffee feels like the only thing carrying us through, whether it’s weeks of late nights at work (or slightly better, too many nights partying) or just an absolutely exhausting schedule, caffeine becomes our reliant partner, and our savior to keep us going.

But actually this over reliance in caffeine is in itself a pretty clear call for rest, sleep and just a little break. Our body and triple shot espresso’s can only take you so far, at some point we have to admit defeat, and cancel those morning plans to give yourself a little lie in, or even better just take a day off to totally recoup.

    #3 EMOTIONS TAKE OVER

When you find yourself getting emotional or overwhelmed by things that otherwise you might take in your stride, laugh at or just brush over …

When emotions start to take over, especially in the work place (whether that’s upset, anger, frustration etc), it’s probably time to take a break. Either a simple tea break or if it’s driven by much longer standing stress, then a day or week off. Sometimes the best decision you can make is to stop, take a moment out, and come back to things when you’re in a better frame of mind.

#4 YOU CAN’T REMEMBER YOUR LAST DAY OFF

It’s always time to take a break when you can’t remember the last time you did so. Whether it’s a quick break in your day at work, or a weeks break in your year.

For me, I’m at my happiest when I can actually take a small lunch break at work to go to the gym or something, and when I can take a longer break (either a long weekend or weeks holiday) every few months. In reality I sit at my desk 8am-8pm most days, work weekends and have gone months without seeing daylight and can barely remember before this last few weeks the last time I actually stopped and took some time out… so taking some well deserved and well needed recoup time is essential. You won’t be at your best until you take a break, relax, unwind, and recover yourself.

#5 WHEN YOUR FAMILY CAN’T REMEMBER YOUR NAME

It’s easy to get swamped by your working & social life, especially when you’re living in a city or country away from home, it’s too easy (and common) for months to pass by before you manage to take some time out to head back home, see family and friends and go back to your roots.

Often there’s no better break than taking a few days out to go home, get some TLC from your mum and just be a sofa slob like your teenage years. A break doesn’t have to be a day off, a week away or a luxe spa getaway … sometimes a few days back home is all the break you need.

    MEDIAMARMALADE_TIPS-1-2

What are your ‘tell tell’ signs that you need to take some time out?
