    . TURKEY 2015 : CLASSIC BEACH STYLE .

I always love the beach for taking photos, not only is it my favourite place for fun, sea and sunshine, it’s also the perfect spot for photography, with perfect lighting guaranteed. Despite a lack of sunshine this week in Turkey so far, the bright sand, clear blue sea & open surroundings mean the lighting is absolutely perfection for a few shots. Luckily my dad was on hand and willing to snap a few shots of my casual beach look … and a good job he did too.

. VINTAGE LEVIS CUT OFFS (SIMILAR) . TOPSHOP WHITE SHIRT (SIMILAR) . OASIS GANDY FLIP FLOPS . VINTAGE PANAMA (SIMILAR) .

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”1092250″]

The other thing I love about the beach, is of course the sartorial order of the day, the classic, no fuss beach style that Aussies & cali girls are fortunate enough to get to live in. For me, vintage denim cut offs, an oversized loose white shirt, salty hair and a classic panama hat to finish things off.

This hat not only looks amazing, but also means a lot to me too. My nan, knowing my love of the fedora, dug out my Grandads old straw hat which he used to wear on holidays and trips to the British seaside, and gave it to me. It’s the perfect fit, and a vintage number that’s a one off, and sentimental to boot.

What’s your off duty beach style?

. NEW REISS ALBERTA NAVY FUR GILET .

A little while ago I had a rather mad moment in Heathrow T5, whether it was the excitement and nerves of the business trip I was flying for, or simply the lure of AW15 collection hanging in the shop fronts, whatever the excuse, I went nuts. I mean actually nuts. I spent my life savings in two hours (not quite, but you get the gist), but the silver lining to this retail madness is that no injuction was issued, which means I flew to Switzerland with a brand new fall wardrobe … featuring these gorgeous black suede Marley booties & Alberta navy fur coat. Not a bad silver lining, right?

. REISS ALBERTA NAVY FUR GILET . REISS MARLEY BOOTS . COS SILK AND WOOL DRESS . CELINE NANO .

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”1090930″]

I fell immediately in love with both these items in Reiss, and with some serious hard work under my belt, I thought it only right I treated myself. The black suede boots are one of my favourite ever shoes, the perfect classic boot and such a simple way to dress up even the most casual of looks.

Fur gilet’s have always been a weakness of mine, in fact they tend to be my go to winter outer layer, if you’ve read my blog for a while then you’ll remember my collection of fur & suede gilets which frequently made it onto mediarmarmalade.com … so it’s no surprise that the Alberta navy gilet stole my heart at first glance.

So all in all, totally justifiable purchases yet. They’re beautiful, seasonally perfect and classic items i’ll know i’ll get tons of wear out of. Kicking off with this simple work look, teaming my boots & jacket with my COS silk and wool dress. For me, this is winter style perfection.

Do you approve of my new buys? It’s okay to have a retail splurge every now and then right?

5 WAYS TO TREAT YOURSELF AND RELAX FOR FREE

. 5 WAYS TO TREAT YOURSELF AND RELAX FOR FREE.

The weekend is a cherished time of the week for me, if anything it’s far too short (I’d happily campaign for a three day weekend), it’s my biggest opportunity to not only catch up on life, see friends and family & dedicate time to my blog, it’s also the perfect time to relax after a heavy week in the office.

These days relaxation tends to be associated with expensive spa breaks or holidays away (which I myself naturally am a sucker for – last week I escaped to Babington house, and yesterday I arrived in Turkey for a week away), but actually relaxing doesn’t have to cost a bomb, in fact there are tons of ways to relax at the weekend without having to spend hundreds of pounds. Today I thought I’d share 5 FREE ways to relax at the weekend with you …

    Mediamarmalade TipsMediamarmalade Tips

    MEDIAMARMALADE_BLOG_TIPS-34

    #1 AFTERNOON TEA (CHEZ VOUS)

Afternoon tea is such a luxury treat, and one of my favourite ways to relax with loved ones and enjoy a little treat, but naturally the cost can be quite a bit, especially when it’s the top London hot spots or country house retreats we all want to go to. But afternoon tea can cost a few pennies if you do it ‘chez vous’ … invite your best pals over, spend the morning baking your favourite cakes, brew a proper English breakfast tea and enjoy Afternoon Tea for free at home.

    #2 PARK LIFE

In the UK we’re blessed with acres and acres of parks and country side, even us Londoners have a dozen beautiful parks on our door steps, whether it’s English heritage sites like Kew Gardens or just the everyday greenery we’re surrounded by with Hyde Park, Regents Park or Richmond Park. These parks are right on our door steps, and the most fabulous places to take a morning stroll, a leisurely picnic or even a revitalizing run or cycle. They cost nothing, but are a sure fire way to help you unwind and relax … there’s nothing that some crisp country air can’t solve.

    #3 PAMPER TIME

A spa day doesn’t have to cost £100 … why not create your own mini spa at home. From a relaxing and candle lit bath, to a special mani / pedi session, with flavoured spa water, herbal teas and healthy treats all on hand. Light your favourite candles, slip on your comfiest pyjamas, pop a little café del mar on, grab a magazine and slip into a ‘spa like zen’ … in the comfort of your own home (the best thing is you can crawl straight into bed without the drive home).

    #4 SHOP (SWAP)

One of my favourite treats is to shop (go figure). But shopping costs A LOT, especially if like me you can get swept up in the retail therapy buzz, only to arrive home and realize you’ve spent your life savings on goods that are far beyond your means (it is the reason I started my blog afterall). But shopping as a luxury treat doesn’t have to cost a penny. Not if you’re savvy about it.

Why not organize a little weekend shopping session with your friends … at your house. Ask your friends to bring 5 or 10 items they no longer want, you can pick items you no longer wear or use … and once you all get together set up a little mini swap shop. Add a little prosecco and some home made cup cakes and you’re well on your way to the perfect retail therapy session without the bill at the end of it. When it comes to fashion and clothes, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure.

If that doesn’t quite cut the bill, then treat yourself to a slightly different high street shopping experience, and tap up the local car boot sales or vintage fairs … a £10 budget can take you a long way and the most important thing is the fun to be had whilst you’re hunting out the trinkets and treasures.

    #5 BE A TOURIST

London in itself (as well as other cities like Bristol, Bath, Cambridge Brighton, Dublin, Edinburgh etc) are full of wonderful sites to walk around and visit … spending a day being a tourist in your city, or a city not too far away is a great way to get out and about, and have the ‘treat like’ feeling of a city break or a mini break without the price tag of a flight and hotel. Even booking a cheap advanced train (you can get from London to Brighton for £6 if you’re savvy) makes the perfect, almost free, day out.

If you live in London, then there are tons of ‘free’ days out right at your fingertips. I always try and visit new villages on the weekends for a free day out and an easy way to relax after a week at work … there’s nothing like coffee shop hopping and exploring a new town to unwind (Hampstead is always a favourite).

The Southbank in London is also well worth a visit, not least for the river walk, but also for the beautiful attractions on route, Borough Market, Gabriels Warf, The London Eye, London Bridge, Maltby Street Market & The Tate to name a few.

Going one step further why not try something different too, perhaps a few gallery visits, many of the top gallery’s actually offer free exhibitions and tours which are well worth a look – The National Gallery, The Science Museum and the National History museum are all donation based and so well worth a fun day out, even the Tate has free areas.

    MEDIAMARMALADE_BLOG_TIPS-3MEDIAMARMALADE_BABINGTON_HOUSE-130

Et Voila. 5 ways to treat yourself and relax for free (or at most a few quid). Will you be giving any of these a go yourself? I’d love to hear your recommendations for ‘free fun’ too?

  • BABINGTON HOUSE

    BABINGTON HOUSE

MEDIAMARMALADE_BABINGTON_HOUSE-164This week I was fortunate enough to have a couple of days off work for some much needed recuperation, and where better to have a little relaxation than the west country, and more specifically Babington House. I’ve been a member for Shoreditch House for quite a while now, but I’d never ventured to any of the houses outside London, and boy had I been missing out. Babington is the perfect little city escape, a sanctuary and just the ideal place to take some time out to relax and unwind. I left wanting to move in there forever.

Today I thought i’d share a little photo diary from my stay, to give you a little taste of the sanctuary for yourself.

We booked the Coach House which was the most fantastic little studio room, with a open lounge and bathroom downstairs and a huge, comfy and luxe bed on the mezzanine upstairs. We enjoyed 90 minute treatments in the cowshed spa which was absolute heaven, and more food than my stomach could handle. All in all it was the perfect two days and the perfect spot to truly unwind, whether that was in the gorgeous pool or pool side lounge, our own little lounge or simply in the relaxed and chilled bar area. I took Jase there for his birthday as a treat, but I have to say it was a massive treat for me too!

We’re already working out when we can go back …

. RIPPED DENIM MINI DRESS .

So I know I’ve been harping on about fall style and my new autumn wardrobe for the past few weeks, mostly driven by the excitement I have for my new AW15 purchases, but i’m actually about to re-embrace my Summer wardrobe, as I’m off for some late summer sun in turkey. This is great for a few reasons, firstly I get a well needed week off work and some even more well needed sunshine, secondly I get to give my Summer wardrobe one final hoorah before it officially gets packed away until next year (i don’t actually do that, FYI).

One summer item that i’ll definitely be getting some more wear out of is this little denim number from Warehouse which I bought as a bit of a transitional number. It’ll perfect in winter with thick tights and the perfect ankle boot, but it’s also a classic and staple summer item. I’ve fortunately managed to get a little summer wear out of it already, with our few weeks of Autumnal sun that we’ve been blessed with, but I’m looking forward to truly giving it a summer style up next week on holiday.

Have you officially packed away your summer wardrobe, or do you have any last minute getaways planned too?

. THE RED SUEDE DRESS .

I’m obsessed with suede, there’s no point dwelling on the topic, you all know it by now. But despite my obsession, I only actually have one suede dress … well until now. Prior to my new little red dress, my suede collection was largely focussed on skirts, coats and boots, but along side my Zara black suede dress, now sits this rather fabulous red number from ASOS.

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”1085304″]

This dress is another of my fall purchases, but fortunately a number that transitions well from Summer into Winter. For the end of summer it’s perfect teamed with a simple pair of sandals or ankle boots, but for winter, it would look incredible teamed with black tights, the perfect pair of Stuart Weitzman knee high booties (one day), and a big oversized winter coat!  But for now, whilst the last of the summer weather is with us, I’ve opted for a bare leg & a simple pair of ankle boots!

How would you style this type of dress for a winter look?

HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS: PART 6 LEARNING FROM YOUR FAILURES

Six weeks have passed and it’s now time for my final instalment of ‘how to turn your blog into a business’. I love writing my tips posts and thought it would be helpful to create a little series for you, something to follow week by week, full of my detailed tips and advice on one specific topic. I hope you’ve enjoyed it, found it helpful, and learnt a little on the way? If you have any requests for future series, i’d love to hear about it?

In the meantime, here’s a little recap of everything we’ve covered so far, and today is all about learning from your failures, top tips for picking yourself up, and continuing on that journey to success. If anything it’s the most important part …

Building a Brand | Creating a Business Plan | Learning to NetworkManaging your finances | How to measure success

    Mediamarmalade TipsMediamarmalade Tips

. HOW TO LEARN FROM YOUR FAILURES .

    #1 ACCEPT

Number one. Accept that failure is part of the journey, it’s normal, it’s helpful and most importantly it’s needed. Needed because it helps you adjust, grow, develop & progress. Even if you get it right the first time, nothing can last forever, you need to continue adapting to grow and build your blog & business … failures help you on that journey.

    #2 ANALYSE

Most importantly, aside from accepting that failure is okay, it’s normal, it’s part of the journey, you need to learn from it. And to learn from failure you must analyse, analyse what happened, what went well, what went wrong, what needs to be improved.

The only negative outcome of failure is to give up, and to not learn, evolve & move on. And understanding and analysing what went wrong is a critical action in helping you build yourself back up and continue to grow. The analyses should be constant (remember my measurement tips), but it’s even more important when you’ve encountered some rocky situations, because it’s analysing your work, your measurement metrics & your delivery that will help you grow.

    #3 ADAPT

Once you understand what’s working and importantly what’s not. You need to adapt your plan (your business plan, your tactics & probably your goals). As I mentioned back in the business plan tips post, your plan should be ever evolving and adapting based on your achievements, learnings and the market around you.

Don’t be afraid to make changes, to accept something isn’t working, or to change your focus based on something that is. This is the key to success … the ability to adapt.

    #4 OPTIMISE

Much like the ability to adapt, the process of optimisation is also key! Optimising your work, your efficiencies, your process, your business set up … part of the learning curve also must be around how you run your business, how well you work, how successful your blog business is. And as I keep saying, learning to adapt, and optimise those things that are working well is key in growing your business, and ensuring continued success!

Don’t ever stop learning, failing, evolving and optimising.

    #5 EMBRACE

My final word … embrace. Embrace the journey, embrace your failures and embrace your successes. You’re not super human, you’re human, and with that comes imperfection & mistakes. This is fine. This is normal. This is good. Embrace it … and embrace the incredible journey you’re going on, as an entrepreneur, turning your blog into a business. What an incredible thing to do, to achieve … embrace your failures. And embrace every success!

The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.

. TEH PINK WASH : NEW COS WOOL COAT .

Pink wash is a seriously hot trend this season, and i’ve decided to embrace it. Although not quite to the same extent as other more braver females, with the pink wash hair look, no, i’m going for a slightly more subtle touch … a pink wool coat for Autumn.

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”1078204″]

I picked up this coat in Cos a few weeks ago after madly falling in love with it’s muted pink wash tones, the boxy, sports luxe cut and over simplified styling. It’s the perfect coat to see me from Summer into Winter and looks great teamed with skinny jeans (and the coat zipped up) or equally teamed with a little wool mini and slogan tee like in today’s outfit.

This skirt is actually a repeat buy. I bought it from Cos last year in a gorgeous Navy blue wool and wore it so much, that when I saw it in green this season, I had to buy it again. I wore the skirt this weekend with my brown leather booties from Topshop and my go to Whistles slogan tee. Voila.

Today is my final day off work before a flying visit back in the office and then jetting off to Turkey for a week of sunshine. I’m maximising my day off at Babington House … relaxing by the spa, enjoying all the healthy and yummy food on offer, and breathing in as much of the chilled country air as possible.

What do you think of the pink wash phase, and my take on the trend?

. THE ITEM I’VE BEEN LUSTING OVER ALL SUMMER : THE EMBROIDERED SHIFT DRESS .

More often than not I fall in love with an item, but for months and months admire from afar, until one day breaking and deciding it’s about time I just gave in and owned the item. The Phillip Lim Pashli for example, along with a whole load of other items in my wardrobe. The most recent of my obsessions was this French Connection dress which I first spotted at Coachella (not actually there sadly, but from someone wearing it there). From that moment I became obsessed, and finally gave in last week and decided that if I’ve been thinking about it for this long … it’s meant to be.

. FRENCH CONNECTION EMBROIDERED SHIFT DRESS . REISS MARLEY ANKLE BOOTS . ASOS FEDORA .

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”1075306″]

And fortunately it seems to have been a good purchase, as not only have I managed to get quite a bit of wear out of it, it’s also received tons of complements every time i’ve worn it. It’s the perfect baby doll shift dress for a laid back festival style look, but equally for Autumn and Winter with thick tights, the perfect ankle boot (check – these are my new Marley ankle boots from Reiss, ankle boot dreams in reality) & a big cosy fur coat (my new fall sleeveless fur coat is the perfect throw on). I decided the dress was a classic investment item … and so bought it, i did.

Do you ever find yourself longing for items for months and months before finally giving in? What do you think of this embroidered baby doll number.
