HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS: PART 4 FINANCE

. HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS: GETTING A GRIP ON FINANCES .

Turning your blog into a business isn’t quite as simple as just doing what you love for a living, naturally blogging for business also means you have to deal with the business side too, and with that comes finances. Whether it’s setting up your business, managing your accounts or working with partners, there’s definitely a financial side that needs good management if you want to succeed.

Today I wanted to share 5 financial things you need to consider and some tips on how to manage the commercial and financial side of a business blog.

. 5 FINANCIAL THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BLOGGING FULL TIME .

    #1 SET UP COSTS

First of all, whilst most of us bloggers run our blogs as a hobby, there’s no denying there are a lot of costs attributed to running a blog. Whether that’s the finance required to set up your blog from a web design & hosting part of view, or the cost of your kit from a laptop to camera, or even the cost spent on developing the content to write about (clothes, products, etc).

Before embarking on blogging full time, be sure to consider your regular AND irregular outgoings and set up costs. They probably come to a lot more than you might think.

    #2 SAVINGS

To that vain, it’s pretty important to have some back up before taking your blog full time, some savings in your back pocket for quiet or slow months, to cover your living costs & rent and to make sure you’re keeping everything balanced cost wise. Blogging full time sometimes can be very fruitful, but as with most freelance & self employed businesses, there can be months where income is very low, if not non existent, so you need to be prepared & have some savings to call on in these moments.

    #3 REGULAR INCOME

That leads me to my third point, a regular income. Working for yourself means a monthly salary is pretty much non existent, your salary will come from affiliates, client collaborations & advertising, but there’s no guarantee month by month that what you earn will be enough to cover your living. So being proactive in managing your finances, securing regular clientèle (or being fortunate enough to have an agency backing) and ensuring your monitoring your projects and project flow is really key.

    #4 TAXES

Don’t forget taxes. I’m not going to go into the details of this in too much detail, it probably warrants a whole post on it’s own. But don’t forget to keep track of your income, accommodate taxes in your project rates & be ready for the tax man each year!

    #5 EXPENSES

And finally, as well as tracking all your income, be sure to keep note of all your business outgoings too, don’t forget that some costs are tax deductible, and therefore should be tracked in your balance sheets too. Income, minus outgoings, equals profit. The profit of your business is what you’ll be taxed on, so make sure you keep track of this. Whether it’s a train ticket to a business meeting, lunch with a client or repairs on your camera, these are all things which contribute to the running of your business and therefore should be deducted from your overall income sheet.

    Mediamarmalade_BLOG_TIPS-36

The finance side of running your own business is clearly complicated, and I’ve only briefly touched on some key elements to consider here. It’s really worth exploring each of these more thoroughly if you’re thinking about going full time, to ensure you fully understand what’s required of you. You can read a few more of my tips here, all about what to consider before blogging full time.

  • 5 REASONS TO CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

5 REASONS TO CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

    Mediamarmalade_SUEDE_FRINGED_JACKET-2

. DON’T FORGET THE IMPORTANCE OF CELEBRATING YOUR SUCCESSES .

Having just landed back in the UK and sat on my sofa for the first time in what feels like weeks, I started to feel a little reflective, reflective of my hard work & efforts and also in turn how important it is to take a moment to stop, acknowledge and celebrate your achievements too. It’s not something I do that often, praise myself or truly tell myself i’ve done a good job. But it’s so important and something I believe we should all do a little more … celebrate the big, the small and everything in between.

    Mediamarmalade_SUEDE_FRINGED_JACKET-1Mediamarmalade_SUEDE_FRINGED_JACKET-4

. 5 REASONS TO CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS .

    #1 BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT

First things first, any achievement deserves a celebration whether it’s a pat on a back, saying well done to yourself, popping some fizz or even treating yourself to a special gift from me to me to reward yourself. When you’ve worked hard, you deserve a little recognition.

    #2 IT’LL MOTIVATE YOU

There’s nothing like a little recognition or praise to spur you on to the next challenge or project, feeling that sense of achievement is a sure fire way to spur you on to do more & be open to new opportunities. There’s nothing more motivating than working hard & delivering something at the end of it. No matter how big or small.

#3 FEEDBACK IS KEY FOR PROGRESSION

Accepting your achievements and acknowledging your failures is really important in your own development … by understanding your mistakes and your successes you’ll better learn for the future. It’s always good to give yourself and others feedback, things you loved and thought were brilliant, and things you could do to make it even better next time around. Giving positive feedback and celebrating achievements is as important as giving constructive advice and tips too.

    #4 IT ENCOURAGES HARD WORK

If you reward yourself for your hard work, you’re more likely to WANT to work hard in the future. If you work your butt off and get no recognition for your efforts and achievements, it makes you feel as though ‘whats the point’ in doing that in the future. But by taking a moment to say well done to yourself & celebrate your own achievements, you’ll feel motivated, ready & prepared for other periods of hard work.

#5 RECOGNITION ACCOUNTS FOR A LOT

Celebrating your successes is also a very important factor in acknowledging, accepting & reinforcing your own value and worth. After all if you don’t believe in your hard work and effort, why would anyone else? You must believe in you, as much as anyone else, if not more, and so recognising and celebrating your successes and accepting and learning from your mistakes will truly help you understand & believe your own value and worth. Something that’s critical in business.

Mediamarmalade_SUEDE_FRINGED_JACKET-6Mediamarmalade_SUEDE_FRINGED_JACKET-7And as Pavlov’s dogs has shown, positive reinforcement & conditioning is a great way of encouraging a behaviour, and knowing that hard work pays off & makes you feel great, is a great motivation for future work. I personally am a big believer in rewarding myself after I do some great work, work super hard on a project or get a promotion or achieve something at work – it’s an amazing feeling to celebrate something you’ve achieved and there’s nothing better than that warm, glowing & proud feeling.

Are you good at celebrating your own successes? What do you do to celebrate & reward yourself?

. LAST OF THE SUMMER PARTIES: SUMMER EVENT STYLE .

One of my favourite things about summer, is dressing for summer events, whether it’s Ascot, industry functions, weddings or simply a good old summer knee’s up, the occasion calls upon wonderful, beautiful summer dresses & it’s the perfect excuse to get dressed up in something special. I’m not the best at recycling my dresses, I always find a new event the perfect excuse to do a little shopping, but actually this season I did invest in a special little number from Reiss which I actually managed to get quite a lot of wear out of.

I picked this dress up at the beginning of the summer and have worn it to an international advertising function, a wedding and also Ascot. It’s the perfect summer event dress, super subtle but chic at the same time. It’s easily styled up or down depending on accessories, and actually will become a classic item in my wardrobe that will last season to season and year to year.

. BOYFRIEND SIZED: STRIPED SHIRT DRESS .

After finding myself in a shopping drought for the last month or so, this last week or two has seen a dramatic turn in events. Not only have I fallen in love with some serious new season gems on the high street, I’ve also nearly bought myself a whole new wardrobe. It started off slowly with a few new purchases from Zara (this shirt dress being one of my finds) & COS, and crescendoed with some serious online shopping Saturday night (I picked up this, this & this) & a duty free blow out at the airport yesterday (you may have spotted some of my shopping on my instagram). It was a £600 shopping spree where I lost total and utter control, but got some fab make-up from Bare Minerals & Bobbi Brown and some gorgeous AW15 pieces from Reiss’s new collection, including these suede Marley boots & this gorgeous sleeveless fur jacket. For me there’s nothing like a little (a lotta) retail therapy to relax me & put me in a good mood (my bank account less so).

I can’t wait to showcase all my new purchases on my blog, but before my Autumn Winter wardrobe really hits, I’m making the most of my slightly more summery garments like this oversized shirt dress. Teaming it with my favourite (and ugliest) summer sandal, the birk. And layering up with my favourite Reiss leather to fight the slight chill that’s hitting the UK.

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR A BLOG PHOTO SHOOT

    Mediamarmalade_BLOG_TIPS-24

    . BLOG PHOTO SHOOTS: A 101 GUIDE .

One of my favourite things about writing my blog is the photography, planning and shooting imagery for my features and creating a visual story which brings to life my editorial. Because I blog everyday some of my content is more everyday, but for some features like this Ted Baker feature I really like to plan something a little more special.

But even if it’s an everyday outfit kinda shoot, there’s no denying the photo shoot takes and requires some serious preparation and consideration. Today I thought I’d share 5 things to do to prepare for a blog shoot.

    Mediamarmalade_BLOG_TIPS-26

. 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR A BLOG SHOOT .

Read All My Photography Tips Here

    #1 FIND A LOCATION

Back when I started my blog I just used to shoot looks on my street before or after work, and whilst that was fine then, nowadays I like to try and shoot in locations that really bring to life my outfit or that help tell the story of what I’ve been up to. When I’m not simply shooting whilst I’m out and about or away, I always try and find a location that offers a simple but beautiful back drop. Fortunately living in west London this means I don’t have to travel far, but I always try and seek new locations or spots so that I give my blog a little variety.

    #2 WEATHER

The weather can make or break a photo shoot, so always try and plan your shooting time around the weather. This isn’t the easiest in the UK with temperamental weather that changes by the hour, but knowing the day is due to dry, or trying to plan around when the suns due to come out can really make your shoot a little smoother. I shoot mostly on Saturday or Sunday and I always try and plan my photo shoots around when I’m likely to get the best weather – because the weather can affect so much of your imagery, especially your lighting.

    #3 KIT PREPARATION

The amount of times I’ve gone out to shoot only to realise I forgot to charge my camera, or I left my remote at home or my memory card in my computer. It’s a bloomin’ nightmare and wastes so much time. Now I always ensure everything is charged, set up and ready to go the night before I do a shoot. Preparation is key.

    #4 PRE STYLE

In the same vein of turning up to a shoot with no charge, I’ve also tried to many shoots without properly trying an outfit on before hand. And oh boy have they been disastrous. It’s easy to throw your clothes in a bag and be on your way, imagining what the ensemble may look like in your head. Sadly in reality it never looks quite like you’d imagined – and so ensuring you’ve tried on everything before hand is a big tip that I can share from previous experience.

    #5 RELAX

The best photos are always capture when you’re relaxed, or unknowing. So finding a photographer, an outfit and a location that makes you relax are key ingredients to making your photos beautiful and natural. I always try and get my sisters to help me shoot when I’m back home or Jase or my tripod when I’m in London, I feel comfortable in front of them (I’m well used to the tripod and random stares now) that I can relax and shoot images that look and feel natural and not awkward or forced.

I always admire imagery that’s caught in the moment, and so for me, I want to try and shoot more natural editorial features in the future, and being relaxed is critical to do that.

  • HOW TO SURVIVE LFW

    HOW TO SURVIVE LFW

    Mediamarmalade x Ted Baker

. 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU SURVIVE LFW .

So today is day two of London Fashion Week, and with New York already been and gone and Milan & Paris to follow it’s a busy time of year for fashion bloggers, jet setting the globe to sit FROW, spending evenings celebrating with brands and designers & running around in new season Choo’s all day and night. It’s a fabulous time of year, but also a rather crazy one. And whilst this scenario isn’t the ‘exact’ situation we all have each Fashion Week, even attending LFW, a couple of shows or events and trying to tackle the new Fashion Week hub in Soho can take some serious juggling, mastering & preparation. So today I thought i’d share my top tips on how to survive London Fashion Week.

    #1 WALK

Assuming we’re blessed with a dry day in London, walking is my biggest recommendation. Soho is infamous for it’s gridlocked and maze like roads and it seems Fashion Weeks new home is only exasperating the crazy London traffic. To save yourself an hour or so sat in the back of a cab stressing out from show to show, i’d recommend walking when possible, jumping on a Boris bike (YOLO) or if worst comes to worst, the tube! And this is coming from a cab obsessive.

And don’t forget running across London isn’t fun in stilettos, if you can fit a pair of flip flops in your Chloe Faye, you won’t regret it.

    #2 PLAN

We all know Fashion Week is mental, especially if you’re fortunate enough to be invited to multiple shows, you find yourself trying to tackle the masses to get from one side of town to the other, not to mention battling the street style hoards who hover awaiting pap shots. So my top tip to ensure you’re not spending the weekend stressed, is to plan, plan and prioritise.

Be conservative when it comes to allowing time to get places, don’t over fill your schedule & have a plan of what you want to do before you leave the house / hotel that morning.

    #3 BASE

With running around all day and probably big gaps between shows it’s always helpful to have a base somewhere central. I’ve been fortunate enough to be invited to The Apartment each fashion week & also be a member of Shoreditch House group which provides a perfect base globally, but even if you don’t have a sponsored event to retreat to, finding yourself a little base to reside to is always worth it … a local hotel lobby, a cute little cafe or even a cafe in the Fashion Week grounds.

You’ll need a little respite so try and organise a base in advance.

    #4 KIT

Chargers, your iPhone, a laptop and of course your camera are all essential Fashion Week Kit, so whatever you do, don’t forget it. Most of all, don’t forget your charger. It’s sods law that when you want to snap your outfit, or shoot a little street style, or capture that walk on the catwalk, your camera will run out of charge. So as well as thinking about your Fashion Week wardrobe, don’t forget your basics too.

A back up mobile charge is always a good idea. Social media becomes your life line at LFW, so don’t be left without phone charge.

    #5 WARDROBE

And of course one of the most important Fashion Week essentials, the wardrobe. Fashion Week is a time when people go to town with their style, embrace the big, bold and sometimes the ugly, it’s the time when you put yourself on show, showcase your style credentials & look to impress the awaiting street style journalists. But with that comes pressure & sometimes the pressure to conform to dressing in a way that may not be totally you.

When it comes to dressing for Fashion Week I have three tips: Be You, Be Comfortable, Be Confident. Style isn’t a gimmicky fashion trend, style is personal, innate & eternal. So don’t try to be someone else, yes wear your favourite ensembles that you save only for special occasions, but don’t dress to impress other people. Dress for you.

‘Fashions fade, style is eternal.’ – Yves Saint Laurent

Are you attending Fashion Week this year? Do you have any tips for surviving the madness?

. TED BAKER SIGNATURE PRINTS x DAY TO NIGHT .

If you’ve read my blog for a little while now, you’ll know I’m a big lover of print and colours, I love adding a pop to my outfits, not only does it look fab but I find that colour and prints often make me feel good too. And if there’s one brand that really delivers on prints and colour, I’m sure we can all agree it’s Ted Baker. Ted’s signature prints always catch my eye and make the brand stand out versus the rest of the high street, and it’s not only the clothing collections, it’s the shoe collections too. I for one am a huge fan of his floral prints, and actually this seasons shoe collection has the perfect transitional items to fit your autumn wardrobe and see you through from day to night (which is always an essential for me).

I teamed my pumps with Ted Bakers new navy midi denim dress at the weekend for a little brunch date with Jase, we headed over to Granger & Co in Nottinghill for a seriously tasty breaky (sweetcorn fritters, smoked salmon & avocado for me).

The same day Jase and I also met my dad for a Michelin star dinner in our local restaurant, The Glass House, naturally I took the occasion as a perfect opportunity to dress up, road test my new print stilettos (another number from the new AW15 collection) & add a little glamour to my life. I’ve always admired Carries tutu outfit from Sex & The City and this lace skirt and camisole was my very own version of the look. Unbelievably fabulous and there’s nothing like a beautiful, big lace skirt to make you feel a million dollars. The stiletto was the perfect, subtle and delicate addition to the look. A true Carrie moment.

I’d been eyeing up the jacket for some time, but the sale price finally tempted me.

I’m grabbing on to the last few days of what us Brits have to call summer, and teaming my suede jacket with my well worn Zara denim mini. Throwing on a little copped jacket like this one is a really easy win when it comes to transitioning you wardrobe from season to season. It’ll also be the perfect outerwear for my late summer holiday which i’ll be going on in October, we’re still debating where to go but all I want is sunshine & heat … as we’ve not had that much of it this year in London.

Have you got any recommendations for a late summer holiday abroad? Where’s good to go in October?

  • HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS: PART 3 NETWORKING

HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS: PART 3 NETWORKING

    Mediamarmalade Blogging for Business

. HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS: NETWORKING 101 .

So today is part three of my ‘turn your blog into a business’ tips series and part three happens to be the one area that I think these days has such a big importance but it’s also the one that becomes a little more difficult when your juggling work and blog. It’s networking.

Networking to me is a skill of nature and less nurture, of course you can put best practice into action (and I’ll share my top tips shortly) but in my opinion networking should be natural, never forced and as much as possible an organic relationship building process (no cold calls etc).

Turning your blog into a business requires a strong network, not only a steady enough network of followers and readers, but also of clients, PR relationships, and of course fellow bloggers. After all it’s these people that will make your business succeed or fail. Successful networking really is a skill, and knowing the best opportunities to network is a big part of that.

When it comes to networking I think there are 5 key things to consider, work on & focus your efforts on.

    Mediamarmalade Blogging for Business

. 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU NETWORK .

    #1 PR & CLIENTS

As I mentioned, when you take your business full time you’re relying on income to keep you afloat, and in the majority of cases that income will come from partnerships with brands and PR’s.

There’s tons of opportunities to meet PR’s and brands, whether that’s through press days or blog events or even through other projects your working on. The key is to attend as many as possible, to meet as many people as possible and get to know the people around you. This sounds easy of course, but time needs to be on your side here!

I’m not one for contacting a company first or out of the blue, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t as long as your polite and start things off slowly – perhaps introducing yourself, your blog and sharing any features you’ve previously done featuring the brand. Some brands I’ve met love the concept of proactive bloggers introducing themselves and its a way of broadening your net of potential opportunities.

I actually wrote a little feature on building relationships and a network which you can read here too.

    #2 COLLABORATIONS

Collaborations are my favourite way to work with a brand, taking a brief and developing a bespoke editorial for a client. I love the focus on content opposed to simply clicks and if quality content is your niche then there are great opportunities to work with brands in this way.

Collaborations can come from a variety of places, client direct, advertising agencies through the likes of an agent (I’m signed to the WaR network), PR’s or even other bloggers. Regardless of where the business comes from you must remember that a paid collaboration is work, so manners, timely responses & full delivery on the brief is essential.

    #3 MEDIA PACK

When it comes to networking, especially online, it’s really helpful to have a media pack readily available to share with brands or businesses who are looking to work with you. It provides them with all the information they need in one professional looking place.

I’ve been meaning to create my own media pack for ages now, but I know how important it is so its next on my to do list.

When you’re pulling together your media pack be sure to share the key information a brand would require from you: your manifesto & what you do, previous clients you’ve worked with, your key stats and of course basic rates.

    #4 CONTACT & COLLABORATIONS

As well as having a chic little media pack in your back pocket, it’s also worth making sure information to contact you is also easily found and that you’re providing potential clients with as much information as possible before they even contact you.

I have a contact, press and collaborations page on my blog which allows prospect partners to see some of the work I’ve done & the ways in which I work. These pages don’t need to be flash (although I wish I’d collected all my press coverage so I could show that in a pretty way too) but just share some examples of what you do & what a brand might get if they work with you.

    #5 INTEGRITY

My final tip when it comes to networking, and I’ve eluded to it throughout, is having integrity. Don’t force relationships or conversations, just be yourself and let them build even if that does take time. After all it’s you they’re buying into, so it’s always best to be the true you.

And that goes for your work too, once you’ve built your network and you’re getting paid work coming in, be sure to keep your integrity with this too. I’m sure it’s tempting to accept every offer made to you for paid collaborations, but if it’s not you, or in keeping with your blog style or tone, your readers will notice and it’ll look disingenuous.

I’m very selective about who I work with, what I write about and how I create my content. And in my opinion I think that’s really important, a blog is only good when it has integrity, when it’s true to you and your passions, so don’t sacrifice that for the sake of a bit of dollar!!
