    . REFLECTING: MEDIAMARMALADE EST 2011 .

I can’t believe that i’ve blogging for nearly 4 years now, Mediamarmalade will be turning 4 in October of this year, and when I take a moment to look where my blog has come from and how it’s developed, grown and changed over it years it really does blow my mind.  I’ve blogged daily for 1,309 days (with not a single day missed), and over 1,370 posts on my personal style, beauty routine and favourite products, food and recipes, my lifestyle and of course my career and blog tips.

Whilst of course lots has changed over this time, my style, the topics I like to talk about and most noticeably my photography, probably the biggest change in the last 4 years has been my blog redesign. Moving away from my quite young & playful blogger design, to this more professional, image orientated & easily navigable new design, on a self hosted platform which I launched in January of this year. The move and redesign is something I spent months if not years planning up and when I finally decided to do it, it was quite a scary time. Despite the process and design process taking far longer than I’d anticipated, i’m so pleased with where it’s got to.

I’m always making little tweaks and adding in more pages or things which I think you’d like, recently i’ve  updated my shop to include home decor, accessories and fashion of course. created a collaborations page and quite excitingly, set up a weekly newsletter for you all.

Today I thought i’d take the moment to reflect on how far my blog has come, make sure you guys know all the ways you can follow along and get my daily posts & also importantly see what you think of it all?

INSTAGRAM: I’m sure you’re all huge lovers of instagram, me too! My instagram is an eclectic mix of my travels, my daily happenings, of course my personal style & some foodie favourites. I’d love it if you followed along & also don’t forget to share your instagram with me in the comments.

BLOGLOVIN: Bloglovin has become one of my most loved blogging websites since relaucnhing my blog, I find it the easiest way to follow all my favourite blogs, read all your posts as and when they go live and also a great place to find new blogs I hadn’t heard of before. Now i’m on a self hosted platform, bloglovin is my go to place to catch up on blogging!

MY NEWSLETTER: My newsletter is something i’ve recently put in place for you all, when I moved away from blogger my subscribers got a little forgotten, and their daily content into their inboxes left behind. So I thought it was about time I worked on improving this, and so I decided to launch a weekly newsletter, with the weeks post all rounded up in a  simple little email, plus i’ll be adding in some bonus content and any other exciting things that i’ve been reading or enjoying in the last week. Be sure to subscribe and let me know what you think!

FACEBOOK: I was very late to the Facebook game with mediamarmalade.com, but don’t fear I now have a fully functional Facebook page which I update daily for you all, filled with my daily posts, interesting articles, pin’spiration & just general life musings. I also follow a lot of my favourite bloggers on Facebook too, I love getting little updates on general daily life & Facebook is a great little space for it.

PINTEREST: I’m an avid pinterest user & continuously lose hours pinning my favourite quotes, fashion inspirations, home decor aspirations and travel musings. I update my pinterest most days and it’s a great place to go and get a little inspiration. If you’re not already following my boards, hop on over and give them a little follow.

TWITTER: Well it would be rude to forget twitter, my most used social platform where I share pretty much anything and everything, and like to have conversations with you guys & other publishers or brands. I love twitter for a little chin wag & it’s my favourite place to actually take part in the bloggging community, so make sure you come and say hello :)

. MISSGUIDED FRINGED SUEDE JACKET x BODEN SUEDE BOOTIES.

If you follow me on instagram (you can find me here if you fancy following along) then you’ll have already spotted this jacket which I got last week from Missguided. I’ve been on the quest for a suede jacket for some time now, really trying to hunt down the perfect version which would work for everyday wear plus look great in the summer. This Missguided fringe version is pure perfection and an absolute bargain, I love it so much that I also want to pick up this version which is just a gorgeous colour and cut, I love it so much that I know i’ll get a load of wear out of it.

I teamed the fringed jacket with my new Boden suede cut out boots which are literally the perfect suede boot … subtly pointed, wearable size heel and a fab lasered design. The combination makes for the perfect bohemian styling and worked perfectly with my cream knit Zara dress, which is understated enough to let the accessories do the speaking. This kind of look is definitely my go to this season, I love the boho touch that suede adds to your look and the effortless vibe these garments create when styled together.

Are you a suede lover – what do you think of this look and how would you style this kind of jacket & booties?

. MISSGUIDED FAUX SUEDE FRINGE SKIRT .

I’ve stepped up my commitment to suede this week, by taking the SS15 trend one step further, yes that’s right, i’ve embraced fringing. Fringing is one of those trends which looks freakin’ amazing on festival goers, lapping up the sunshine and dancing their way into the early hours at Coachella, but one such trend that sporting back in the UK (or just in general life) is a little harder to pull off and ‘work’. But when has a style challenge of that nature ever stopped me from trying (i’m forever trying out new things, and usually flopping, knee high socks i’ve learnt, are really not for me)!

When trying out a new trend that you love, but you’re not totally sure how it’s going to work on you, it’s always good to start with an affordable high street version, before committing to a more expensive or branded version. This missguided fringe skirt was the perfect stepping stone in my journey into fringing. It’s a gorgeous burnt orange colour which I absolutely love, and a real flexible material making it very comfy to wear.

I sported the look earlier this week with a simple white shirt & my new denim jacket from Boden. Given the slightly boho and festival vibe of the skirt, I added my lace up heels to finish the look off. The look is definitely ‘wearable’ and in many ways plays down the fringing making it suitable for more everyday occasions (maybe not everyday, but special occasions at least).

I really want to try teaming the skirt with a big oversized knit jumper too, with flat gladiator sandals and a simple cross body bag, i think the dressed down styling of that look would also work really well and definitely make the skirt even more wearable!

Are you a fan of fringing? Have you given it a go yet, what do you think of this look?

  • HOW TO BE A SUCCESS

    HOW TO BE A SUCCESS

    MEDIAMARMALADE_TIPS-27

    . HOW TO BE A SUCCESS : 5 THOUGHTS .

Being a success is something that we all, no doubt, continuously strive for. I for one am always working hard to be a success, to achieve successes & push myself and my skill set to be the most successful possible. The funny thing though, about success, is that it’s so utterly subjective. It’s dependent on so many variables, the person, the context, the goals. Success to me is personal, and success has to be measured and defined against specific goals, ambitions and targets that you’ve set out and defined yourself.

Success as a topic is a minefield really, and i’ve already attempted to tackle the question of ‘What is blog success‘ (in fact my article was actually featured in Blogosphere magazine which was quite the ‘success’), but today I thought i’d share my 5 thoughts on ‘success’ from what it is, what it means for us all individually and how we can achieve our own successes.

It’s such a broad topic, i’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic too :)

    MEDIAMARMALADE_TIPS-40

    #1 DEFINE SUCCESS

For me, the first step on the route to success, is of course defining what success is to you. Perfectionism, alongside success are such ambiguous terms that unless you really define what they mean to you, could end up being painful, stressful and pressurising achievements to try and deliver on.

The main thing I think any successful person (whoever you may deem those people to be) have in common, is that they have a plan, an ambition, a goal post. They know what they want, and they’re working towards achieving it.

So step one … define what success is to you!

    #2 SET YOURSELF GOALS

Naturally if you want to achieve the ultimate of successes, you need to have not only defined what that success actually is, but also set yourself goals, a roadmap & objectives that will help you achieve them. Regardless of whether your ambition is blog success, career, family or personal related, setting yourself milestones, little goals, little tasks will only help you achieve your long term successes and ambitions.

I actually wrote a whole post on how to develop a business plan for your blog which talks about and shares ideas and thoughts on setting goals and how to measure success etc, which is a really helpful guide to identifying what your success objectives should be based on and how best to go about setting out and delivering on your ambitions.

    #3 BE SPECIFIC ON TIMINGS

Success is ambiguous enough on it’s own, let alone without any specific timing plan! It’s no good saying ‘I want to be CEO of my company one day’ … that’s so far removed from reality that delivering on it is near on impossible! So as well as being specific on goals, be specific on timings and when you want and need to achieve your goals. The more specific you can be, the better!

One question that I always think is a good sense check of your ambition & progress path is to think about where you’d like to be in 5 years time … once you’ve defined that goal, you can think about the specifics you need to do to get there.

    #4 FOCUS ONLY ON YOU

A really really really important tip and one that is so often hard to actually do, is to focus on you. And you only. Forget about those around you, what they’re achieving, what they’re doing and the successes they’re managing to deliver! Everyone has their own journey, own ambition and own successes along the way, the most important thing you can do is to celebrate their achievements, and focus on delivering against your own. I actually think comparing yourself to others can be one of the most negative things to do, and can massively hinder your journey to success, rather than aid it. Whilst it’s great to take check of the competition, the market & the landscape, as these are all things that can affect your journey, they should not be your focus or definition of your own success.

    #5 GET FEEDBACK

On the journey to success, it’s important to take check, get feedback and seek guidance along the way. You as a person can be your harshest judge, equally people can easily be disillusioned and overly confident in their ability, when perhaps in reality they’re ‘not quite there yet’, to avoid any confusion, it’s always good to get feedback from others on your performance, delivery & progress along the way … whether that be your boss, peers, clients, readers of your blog or just your family and friends. Be sure to measure your success and progress based on general consensus or actual facts and figures, not just what you think or feel.

I for one can feel like a total failure one day if i’m having an emotionally bad day. Others I can feel like i’m bossing it when I get a few exciting emails or opportunities.

The emotions around success can fluctuate incredibly … so always ensure your journey is grounded in good people, measurable objectives and a very clear definition of what it is you want to achieve.

Ultimately success is your oyster … I firmly believe in this day n age, we can achieve whatever we set our mind to, with hard work, high spirits & a non stop flow of passion and enthusiasm!

    # BONUS: BALANCE

The irritating thing about people who we often admire as successes is that it’s not just their achievements we aspire to and respect, it’s often that they seem happy, content, and like they’ve got life sussed. And this is a really important thing to remember … success isn’t (or shouldn’t be) just about financials, big awards or achievements. In my opinion the ultimate life success is having balanced career and personal life well … having achieved my career ambitions, but not at the sacrifice of wellbeing, friends, family & fun!

So on your quest for success, make sure to check in on ‘life’ too. Have fun, and enjoy yourself on the journey!

MEDIAMARMALADE_TIPS-29I really hope you found this post and my thoughts on defining and achieving success interesting, if not useful! I’d absolutely love to hear what your ambitions are, whether that’s work, blog or just life ambitions, and what you’re doing to help achieve them!

If you have any other tips too, be sure to leave them in the comments, i’m always open to new ideas and opinions!

MY FAVOURITE SPRING TRENDS TOGETHER: DENIM & SUEDE .

Every season I inevitably fall in love with a few trends, it’s not that I deliberately follow them per se, more that I just find myself constantly buying or longing over certain garments of trends. This season you all quite clearly know its denim and suede … but what hasn’t quite happened before, so perfectly at least, is the combining of these two trends to create the absolute perfect dream attire. That was until I popped a little denim over my favourite suede mini and created what has to be one of my favourite Spring looks this year. There’s nothing fussy or too styled about it, it wasn’t forced, it was fate. The denim jacket and the suede skirt were literally made for each other …

I have to say my sister is quite the pro these days when she’s shooting my looks, she knows exactly what composition and styling I love and always gets it so perfect. Not only is this outfit one of my firm favourites but it’s also one of my favourite set of pictures for quite a while too!

5 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR LIFESTYLE THIS SPRING

    MEDIAMARMALADE_HARRIETTS_21ST-76

. 5 LITTLE WAYS TO BOOST YOUR LIFESTYLE THIS SPRING .

I always get really excited for Spring, for me it’s a hopeful time, it’s hope of sunshine, fun afternoons spent in the park, long evenings around the BBQ, more effortless and carefree style, sun kissed skin and all my favourite foods & drinks. Whilst i’m definitely not one for making drastic changes season to season, Spring is always a time of year where I feel re-energised and excited for things to come, and a time where I seem to naturally kick start my lifestyle a little. Get a little more active. Healthier. Active.

The term ‘Spring Clean’ feels really relevant to me … i’m sure it’s origination must have come from everyone feeling the same way at this time of year. But Spring cleaning your life is one thing that I like to embrace at this time of year, and so whilst i’m doing my own little lifestyle spring clean, I thought i’d share some of my tips & ideas for how you too can give your lifestyle a little boost & re-energisation!

    MEDIAMARMALADE_HARRIETTS_21ST-75

#1 START THE MORNING WITH A JUICE

First of all, with slightly warmer days and lighter mornings, getting up early & starting your day in an energised and healthy manner is one way of really kick start your lifestyle for Spring. There’s something about warmer weather that makes me want to eat well, drink well and live well, and so starting my day with a fresh juice is always a good way to ensure i’m getting a health boost, eating breakfast (which i’m notoriously awful with during the week) and generally giving my body a well needed detox after a Winter of naughty eating & too much red wine.

    #2 WALK

The second thing to do when Spring arrives is to get a little more active, hopefully long gone are the days of drizzly weather and freezing winds, and so choosing a more active way of getting about is an easy way of getting those muscles back in gear and also getting you out and about enjoying the fresh air and boosting your serotonin levels.

Why not boost your lifestyle this spring by taking a cycle on the weekend, walking to meet friends rather than getting the bus or train, strolling to the shops rather than driving and just generally getting a little more active. You’ll be thankful by the time you’re getting into your bikini that you took the stairs rather than the lift …

    #3 VISIT THE SEASIDE

I absolutely LOVE the seaside, it’s such a peaceful, happy place to me, that I love to hit the beach as much as I possibly can. Being a south west girl i’m used to living a quick 30 minutes from beautiful south coast beaches and so whenever I can I try and have a little day trip to the seaside, even if it’s just for a walk or a little picnic.

Jase and I took a little trip to Mudeford a couple of weekends ago for a long cliff walk and fresh lobster lunch on the seafront, there’s nothing like clear blue skies, fresh sea and beautiful little beach huts to boost your emotions & get you excited for summer holidays.

As soon as Spring arrives … plan a trip to the seaside!

    #4 THROW A BBQ

Any excuse for a BBQ … as soon as the sunshine appears i’m straight on the BBQ front. In fact I think I had my first bbq of the year in March. I always have my annual BBQ for my birthday in April and Jase & I love a good barbie when the sun’s shining. BBQ’s incorporate all my favourite things, sausages, pimms, fresh home made salads, sunshine and al fresco dining … oh and of course friends and family.

So dust off your cobwebs and organise a little BBQ get together!

    #5 SPRING CLEAN

It wouldn’t be a spring lifestyle boost if I didn’t talk about taking the time and change in season to have a spring clean – not just a house clean (which is always well needed after the Winter months of keeping the windows locked shut & barely getting fresh air and daylight into your home), but wardrobe and routine spring clean too.

I never actively think about doing a Spring clean, but inevitably every year at this time I end up giving my home a little overhaul (this season of course upgrading my bedroom with a little beauty & shelving area), clearing out my wardrobe & ordering myself a few new clothing treats (any excuse to shop) and also taking a little check of my health too … usually Spring (and the imminent bare legged season) makes me realise how much I should hit the gym a little & cut down on those cosy evenings in front of the fire with my favourite takeaway.

Taking the opportunity to spring cleaning your lifestyle, your home, personal style and even daily routines is a great way to make some positive little tweaks to boost your overall wellbeing.

MEDIAMARMALADE_BODEN_DENIM_JACKET-26So there we go, 5 ways to boost your lifestyle this Spring, nothing major, but for me, these little things really improve my lifestyle and also just get my re-energised and excited for the summer months to come!

What are your favourite things to do in Spring? Do you have any tips for boosting your lifestyle at this time of year?

. INTERIORS: STYLING MY BEDROOM SHELVES .

After celebrating my birthday back in April and getting spoilt with so many beautiful home decor pieces (I did a mini gift haul incase you missed it), I felt really inspired to give my abode a little spruce up. Call it a spring clean of sorts. I wanted to sort through all my stuff, clear out the bits I’ve just had hoarded away for months and in doing so find some new homes for my birthday treats and beautiful new home decorations.

I’ve been pinning my favourite home inspirations for a long time (you can get jealous here) and always find it amazing how people style up ikea basics to make the most amazing statement home styling stress. I’d been pinning so much and getting so inspired I decided to give it a go myself – clearing out a big old cabinet I had in my bedroom storing all my makeup and junk and replacing it with a matching set of cheat of drawers (doubling up as bedside tables for jase and I), a gorgeous new vintage inspired lamp, and most importantly a little statement wall decor to add a little personality to the show!

    . HOME DECOR FAVOURITES .

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”752266″]

I picked up these ikea shelves for around £45 I think, which when you consider how smart they look is quite the bargain! Rather than fill them with all my stuff I wanted to keep them as decorative and non stuffy as possible – perfumes, pictures, candles and plants only! I decorated the shelves with some of my new home decor presents, my favourite candles and some cute little cactus which I found in ikea for tuppence!

My beauty cabinet has been transformed into a super organised beauty drawer, with most my daily skincare products hidden away and neatly stored!

The shelving and drawers gave me a good excuse to have a clear out but most of all the chance to give my bedroom a little extra styling. I absolutely love the changes – as simple as they were to make they’ve really given our bedroom a homely feel and made it feel even more personal to us!

To finish things off I’ve also picked up a copper framed mirror to hang on the wall above the drawers and next to the shelving to really give the corner a little character, and provide a more handily located mirror to put my makeup on with.

I really enjoyed designing this little area of my bedroom and taking the time to work out how I wanted to style it – opposed to filling it up by accident and it having no real ‘design’ to it! Now I’m inspired to tackle more of my house, I’d love to create a little reading corner with a cosy armchair and cute coffee table – I just need more room!

I’d love to know what you thought of this slightly different post – are you a fan of home decor?

  • HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BRAND

HOW TO TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BRAND

    Chloe Digital

. CHLOE DIGITAL X WAREHOUSE – TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BRAND .

Last week I had the pleasure of joining some of my blogging pals for a little breakfast workshop with Warehouse and Chloe Digital. As you will know from my regular blog tips series, putting my all into my blog, making it interesting and inspiring to read, delivering you quality features daily and also ensuring the design, navigation & SEO etc are all top notch is a constant battle of mine … I spend a lot of time working on my blog and it’s something thats grown from more than being just a hobby to me. So when Warehouse invited me down to their Oxford St store for a workshop with Chloe Digital (who i’d actually not heard of before, but it is a fab consultant & runs a brilliant tech business for bloggers, and actually part of the Reward Style family) I jumped at the chance.

The session was really enjoyable, motivating and informative, and so I thought i’d take the time to share with you the things we learnt, Chloe’s key tips and advice for transforming your blog into a brand and successful business, and the key things I took from the morning.

    Chloe Digital

. CHLOE DIGITAL – HOW TO 5 TURN  YOUR BLOG INTO A BRAND .

    #1 GET A PURPOSEFUL MANIFESTO

One of the first things Chloe spoke about was the need to have a purposeful manifesto, so that readers, new and old, know exactly what it is that you and your blog stand for. Your manifesto should set out your ambition, your promise and your purpose … putting it simply, your manifesto should be what you’d want to be remembered for.

#2 HAVE A UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION

The second point, and it should build from your manifesto is having a unique, clear & defined proposition.  This encompasses everything from the content you produce, to blog design, to your general tone and style, identify what it is you offer, and excel in it.

When thinking about your proposition, think about how you want people to feel when they come to your site or engage with your brand on other channels, what is it your readers love and want, what does success look like to them and to you, what is it that you are giving your customers, why should they come to your blog?

Once you’ve defined it, be explicit about it, be specific and constantly stay true to yourself.

Be strategic and continue to optimise your game!

    #3 KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

The key thing in truly establishing and distinguishing your blog as a brand, and not just a little online diary, is really in being an authority to your audience. Being THE place they go to for inspiration, THE place they go to for advice, THE place they go to for recommendations … when a blog becomes a brand, it’s usually because the blogger has managed to establish themselves and their content as a true authority to their audience.

To be able to really become an authority, you need to know and establish your niche. You can’t really be the authority for ‘fashion and lifestyle blogging’, but maybe you are an authority in bohemian style, or an authority to career woman or an authority on all things vintage. Whatever your niche, embrace it.

As well as knowing your own niche, spend some time working out what it is that your readers love about your blog too. Who is it that reads your content, who is it that comments and engages on social, what content is most popular, what do your readers like … in understanding your consumer, you can better serve their wants and needs.

#4 MAKE YOUR BLOG A 360 VIEW OF YOUR BRAND

These days it’s not just about your blog and a singular blog post, your brand is about every social touchpoint that you engage with or post on. Your blog. Instagram. Twitter. Facebook. Events. Meetings. To really establish your blog as a brand, you must live the brand across everything that you do, all of the time.

Success really comes when you establish your blog as a destination where people go to engage and interact with your brand.

During the presentation Chloe talked about the shift being when your blog becomes less about the ‘newest’ post, to more of a destination for content on your specific niche. The trick of the trade is creating timeless content, a timeless layout and navigation process (cleverly linking back to other posts and pages, showcasing your best content and creating resources based on what your readers love – a travel page, or city guide page for example) … a destination where your best content is the focus, not just the latest content. I for one am definitely not very good at this particular point, as i’m forever (well daily) sharing new content and posts which ultimately replaces content that my readers (I hope) would love, but may not have got round to reading yet. But in turning your blog into a destination, the focus becomes more about your most popular, ‘evergreen’ content which when new readers arrive should be easily accessible and clearly wins people over on first click.

    #5 KNOW CODE FUNDAMENTALS

If you’re going to be a successful blogger and make your blog a business, then it goes without saying that knowing a little about coding is quite the necessity. Before I redesigned my blog, i fully created and coded my entire blog myself, yeah it wasn’t as flash as my blog now, but I learnt so much in creating it myself and now know enough of the basics to help me deal with most minor tweaks or tech issues that crop up.

. STYLE DISCOVERY: DENIM ON DENIM .

This post is a story of two tales, the first tale is that no matter how hard I try I simply cannot be disciplined when it comes to photo volume. I can only apologise for the sheer volume of photos you are about to see (blame the lack of condensing on the fact i’m rushing before going to norway this afternoon). The second tale is a more positive story of discovery … a style discovery of the wonders of denim on denim! I can’t believe i’ve never doubled up my favourite trends … but today’s post is most likely to be the first of many where denim on denim comes to play!

To be honest, as a personal style blogger, it’s probably neglegant that i’ve never given denim on denim a go. I think the 90’s days of Justin & Britney’s denim love affair probably put me off, but the good news is that there are chic ways to pull of the combo. And this Whistles tencel shirt and Zara denim mini is the perfect solution!

I sported the look a few weekends ago for a little lunch date with Jase in Bristol, the sun was out, and so came my legs and in toe my favourite lace up sandals which just finish off pretty much all my favourite looks perfectly.

Expect to see a lot more of this double denim dream …

Are you a denim on denim wearer? Have you doubled up on any other of this seasons favourites – suede on suede, fringe on fringe?

PS: I’ve decided to kick off a weekly newsletter for mediamarmalade, full of the weeks most popular posts, looks, tips & tricks. Be sure to subscribe here to get your weekly inspiration! The first issue will come out Sunday :)
