    . DENIM JACKET & KNIT DRESS .

You all know how much I am loving suede this season, but actually denim and knit are also fast becoming firm favourites too. Initially driven by my denim skirt obsession, but also now with the denim jacket, a classic garment but one i’ve not given much airtime in the last few years. My new Boden denim jacket has really made  me rediscover my love for the look.

The jacket was the perfect add on to my Zara knit dress (which I could live in if the weather permitted – ideally with a deep tan & panama hat to boot) and worked perfectly with my lace up gladiator heels and lady Celine. This look is my ideal summer party ensemble, it’s the kinda look that would be great for a BBQ party or rooftop drinks, and even better on holiday for post beach activities!

What do you think of the knit and denim look? Are you a denim coveter too this season?

. 5 ESSENTIAL CAREER TIPS TO DRIVE SUCCESS .

Success is something i’m always striving for, whether that be on my blog or in my career or generally just in life. I always like to know i’m doing my best & feel great satisfaction in achieving things like promotions at work, new readers on my blog, securing brand collaborations or even just little successes like delivering a great presentation or writing a great article on my blog!  Success to me is quite a subjective thing, and success should always be based on your own goals and ambitions and never related to someone else, so to that point your journey, targets and goals should all be bespoke and personal to you!

But as well as these personal milestones or goals, when it comes to careers I do think there are some more generic things which I think all people should master in order to have a successful career, they’re the common sense, essentials of being a successful career woman or man and in my opinion are the basics of driving success!

So today I thought i’d share my top 5 essential career tips … I hope you find them helpful!

How to be a better blogger

5 TIPS FOR THE CAREER DRIVEN

    #1 PROFESSIONALISM

This should be obvious, but it’s truly one of the most important things when it comes to having a successful career. Being professional is of critical importance, and it covers a whole spectrum of things, from how you present yourself on a daily basis, to the tone in which you speak to clients, your teams and your seniors, your punctuality, your organisation, as well as your ability to manage expectation and deliver great work. Ensuring that you are always professional, and of course personable and yourself, really is an important factor in establishing yourself within a business and role, garnering respect and trust from your clients and naturally of course in making friends & supporters in your company.

It can be easy to let professionalism slip, particularly on days where you may be in a bad mood or tired, and even more so in social situations when you might be having a few drinks and letting go a little. But it’s important to ensure you never cross the line, have fun, be yourself & be personable, but always ensure you’re keeping a little professionalism at the heart of it all!

    #2 PROACTIVE & ADD VALUE

To really go far in your career I personally believe you need to be proactive, in this day n age, it’s not enough to simply do your job and do it well, you need to go above and beyond call of duty, add value beyond just the day to day and really establish yourself as a person who’s willing to help drive the business you work for, as well as your own personal development. Going above and beyond can obviously be tricky as it requires additional commitment and time (which given how long we all work anyway, is a little hard), but is a key way in not only making a name and positive profile of yourself, but also in showcasing your skill set to the broader business outside of your specific team or discipline. In my industry pitches & projects are a great way of adding value beyond your day to day job and offer a great opportunity to work with new people, get senior exposure & generally showcase your ability.

    #3 WORK LIFE BALANCE

Whilst I’ve said it’s important to go above and beyond, I also think it’s super super important to have a good work life balance, and the reason for this is twofold. Firstly for your own health & wellbeing, ensuring you have a good balance between work time and downtime is really important. Not only will ensuring you get sufficient down time help overall productivity, it’ll also help give you perspective, clarity & a renewed sense of motivation and inspiration (which is a critical factor in delivering great work). The second reason is more from a profile point of view, whilst people may think it’s great to be seen in the office 24 / 7, late at night, early mornings, emailing at weekend, actually it’s not. It takes a little while to accept this point, and force yourself to stop, but ultimately working all hours of the day just makes you look incapable of managing your work streams efficiently and in a timely manner, and it also doesn’t necessarily suggest you’re good at managing clients or internal business expectations (sometimes it’s good to say no, push back, challenge delivery deadlines etc). Of course the odd late night every so often is normal (christ in my industry we’re often working until  8pm due to heavy work loads & deliverables) but doing this everyday, with no real reason or critical projects to be delivered doesn’t make you look particularly good. most companies these days are very conscious of their corporate responsibility and employee health and wellbeing, so seeing employees continuously working all hours of the day does ring alarm bells, not only for their own personal health but also for the precedent it can set for the rest of the team or company. It’s terrible how a negative culture can be created if work life balance isn’t kept in check!

So my top tip, just monitor your own work life balance, and be critical. Do you need to be in the office that long, do you need to deliver all of that by tonight? And if not, well then make an executive decision to leave, even if it’s that you try and leave on time twice a week, or take a lunch break to go to the gym a couple of times … this is actually a really positive step & will help you for multiple reasons!

    #4 TRAINING

Don’t stop learning, ever! If you want to succeed, grow and continue to be the best you can be, then you need to keep training, keep upskilling and keep learning more. Put yourself forward for industry talks, attend all training offered to you, seek out new training which you feel would up skill you in areas of weakness, be proactive & be willing. Even CEO’s have to continuously learn more, adapt their skillsets and adjust to ever changing industries … if you want to be the top of your game you have to be agile, and forever soaking up new information!

    #5 MENTORS

This is a little tip which can easily be forgotten, but also one that really can be a huge help in having a successful career, and that’s to find yourself a mentor. Whether that be a senior person in your business who you aspire towards or who you believe has skills that you could learn from, a person from a completely different industry who you can trust to give sound advice and perspective, or simply a partner, friend or family member who can offer you valid feedback & career advice! I personally need to find myself a mentor, someone who is leading businesses in my industry and who can provide guidance and advice on progressing my own career into the business leadership realm which would be my next step and linear promotion, from business director, to a managing partner! Consulting with someone who knows you, your industry and your ambitions and who has been on the same journey can be a really great way of not only inspiring you but also helping you to achieve your goals!

How to be a better bloggerSo there you have it, my top 5 career tips! they’re by no means right, and in no way exclusive, but for me they’re the 5 things that I really help you establish a successful career and keep it blossoming year on year!

I’d love to hear if you have any career tips or whether you find any of these helpful for your own careers? Don’t forget to check out all my other career and blog tips posts here too.

. WISTERIA LANE – SPRING BOHEMIA X BODEN.

If you caught my afternoon tea post on Sunday, or follow me on instagram then you’ll have noticed a lot of wisteria  … it’s one of my favourite spring flowers and automatically puts a smile on my face, wisteria and blossom are the first real signs of Spring for me so i love seeing them start to bloom (I have wisteria in my garden and it’s so pretty). Lainston House on Saturday was full of it, and so I thought i’d maximise my visit there and roped my sister into capturing some pictures of my outfit from the day (poor sod, it was her birthday too). The setting was beautiful and actually seemed to work well with the colours of my Zara playsuit … a firm favourite from last season!

I actually really liked my outfit for the occasion, it’s not often I master a look that looks good but is also comfy to wear (seriously, how hard is it), but this Zara playsuit always delivers on both and has been a very worthwhile purchase for me (you may remember it from last Summer’s outfits – here / here / here ?)!

I teamed the playsuit this weekend with my new Boden denim jacket which is fast becoming my go to outerwear of choice, I absolutely love the dark wash denim and the rough cut / fringed neckline (slightly different to the standard collar) and it goes perfectly with all my favourite seasonal trends, especially suede (my tan suede skirt looks brilliant with this jacket – stay tuned for that look)! I finished things off with my favourite accessories … the usual culprits, Lady Celine, Clubmasters & my suede lace up heels!

Are you a fan of bohemian style? This for me would be the perfect boho coachella look!

. MY SPRING WARDROBE – THE DENIM PLAYSUIT .

This weekends sunshine feels like a million miles away now, with today being seriously drizzly and grey in London, but thankfully I made the most of the sunshine this weekend and gave my Spring wardrobe a little run for it’s money. I always end up buying tons of new season clothes out of season, whilst it’s still winter, and then leave them sat eagerly awaiting wear for months on end.

This denim playsuit from Zara was an SS15 item which I picked up in Jan / Feb and haven’t had the opportunity to wear all that much since I bought it (just this once, here). So this weekend provided the perfect excuse & I decided to pop it on yesterday for a little stroll around town & a second round of Afternoon Tea in one of my favourite little cafes in Wickham (Lilly’s Cafe). It was a little windy so my last season ASOS duster provided a trusty wind shield, and also the perfect colour contrast to the denim!

Have you got any new seasonal purchases which you’re still waiting to wear?

. AFTERNOON TEA AT LAINSTON HOUSE – SPARSHOLT .

As you may have noticed from my Instagrams and tweets, yesterday was my sisters 21st birthday and we celebrated with a lovely day and afternoon tea at Lainston House in Sparsholt. We’ve been to Lainston house a couple of times for my birthday but also mothers day too, it’s one of my favourite country manor houses in the south (the perfect place to get married, ahem) and they do a fab afternoon tea in the gardens with views of their acres of grounds. We were lucky enough to have the sun grace us for the day too, so all in all the perfect day.

The wisteria had blossomed the outhouse making for the most beautiful setting, and as always the cakes & sandwiches were divine (I had my own gluten free version with some seriously tasty treats, fruit cake, gluten free scones, orange and carrot cake, and a  few more which we bought home for later). At £25 a person it’s the perfect special treat.

If you haven’t been to Lainston house before it’s a beautiful manor house right in the heart of hampshire & well worth a visit on a  sunny day if you’re celebrating a special occasion, it’s one of our favourite places to visit when we have a good enough excuse.

I hope you like the pictures from the day & this kind of post, it’s a little different to my norm, what do you think?

. HOW TO BE A BETTER BLOGGER – WHAT I LEARNT FROM MY Q&A WITH DELICIOUSLY  ELLA .

As you will have noticed if you caught Wednesdays blog post, earlier this week I got the opportunity to attend a Q&A with Deliciously Ella. Whilst the session was predominantly about her healthy living & eating lifestyle, I did also ask a couple of questions more focussed on her incredible success and her blogging journey.  Ellas blog has been an unbelievably huge success, despite only starting it three years ago. Whilst the zeitgeist of heathy living definitely being on her side, i was keen to hear her thoughts on how she grew her blog, what she believes pushed her from blogger to brand and her journey making Deliciously Ella a successful business with a book, app, office and 4 man team to boot.

What I was really happy to hear was that Ella’s success was actually all organic, as I very firmly believe it should be, but she did however share a few specific things that she believed help really push the interest in her blog and kept readers coming back. I thought i’d share these things today, as i for one found them really interesting and helpful too.

How to be a better bloggerHow to be a better blogger

#1 DON’T JUST POST, ENGAGE ON INSTAGRAM

One of the main outtakes I took from Ella and her own blog success was the importance of engaging with people who chose to engage with you. Ella mentioned that she spends quite a lot of time reading & responding to peoples comments on her instagrams, use of the Deliciously Ella hashtag and generally people who might be sharing dishes they’ve cooked from her recipes. I thought this was a great sentiment, and actually a really nice way of giving back. Whilst it does take a lot of time, she really credited this for helping grow her following.

    #2 RESPOND TO READERS

And its not just followers on instagram, responding to your blog readers comments, tweets and Facebook comments was another thing Ella mentioned that she spends a lot of time doing. It’s actually something that takes a hell of a lot of time, and i’m not necessarily the best at, but Is something that I really want to start doing more. Spending the time to answer questions, thank people for comments and generally just start more of a two way relationship is really important in this day n age and something that clearly really helped Ella build a loyal following who are her biggest advocates. Word of mouth really does have a big impact on driving growth and success.

#3 THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR READERS WANT

I’ve always talked about ‘blogging for you’ and writing about the things you personally are absolutely passionate about, and whilst I still fully believe in this, Ella did open my eyes to blogging for your readers too. Ella constantly reviews what readers are saying and asking for, and always tries to tailor her blog posts or recipes to suit what her readers are wanting. I think this is a really interesting way of doing things, and clearly can help drive the success of your blog, as ultimately you’re giving people exactly what they want to read (but still within your niche & passion points).

Whether that be listening to readers comments or tweets, or generally looking at google trends or  current zeitgeists within your niche, writing for yourself but also about topics or themes that your audience are really interested is definitely a key way to garner interest & hopefully expand your reader base.

    #4 REMEMBER, QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Another thing I learnt from the Q&A with Ella is the importance of quality over quantity. It’s something I talk about quite a lot, but don’t necessarily practice on my own blog, where I post daily still and have done for nearly 4 years. Ella posts around 2 -3 recipes a week, but when she does blog and post these recipes, there always features she’s taken a lot of thought and consideration to develop. From listening to what her readers want, to sourcing ingredients to testing the recipe and then shooting & developing the final feature.

The quality over quantity debate is something I am really thinking about more and more lately. With my own personal strive for success & quality features, plus of course the reality of a full time career to balance my time with, it’s probably a good idea for me to re-think about my blogging frequency & content flow.

    #5 JOIN THE COMMUNITY

Not necessarily a totally new point … but as I mentioned, the overall thing I took from Ella’s discussion on  her blogging success was really that she spends a lot of effort and time engaging and joining in with the community, whether that’s supporting and working with other food bloggers, simply creating a conversation with her readers or followers or taking part in industry talks and Q&As’. Really taking an active part in the community is a great way to introduce yourself to new people, genuinely add some value to your readers & provides a great platform to grow your following and reader base.

How to be a better bloggerHow to be a better blogger

So there you have it, the 5 things I learnt from Deliciously Ella regarding blogging, which I think can massively help you become a better blogger. Ella really highlighted to me the importance of not just providing great content, but also about building relationships with your readers, the industry & most importantly the people that support you on your journey.

I think it’s symptomatic of a busy work & demanding week, but I find myself constantly counting down to Friday when I know i’ll have two days of fun and carefree living, time to blog & shoot my imagery, catch up with friends and family and of course just generally relax. Todays look is my ultimate weekend wear, when i’m chilling out, running errands and catching up with friends, you’ll usually find me in laid back denim (my mom jeans are my go to this spring) and a simple tee or knit. I’ve rediscovered my love for the breton top lately and love it styled with my mom jeans. The best part of this look though is of course another pair of new shoes, and in fact another Zara purchase (they’re so on point this season). These lace up gladiator sandals are the perfect summer sandal and look fab with jeans & summer dresses alike!

    Voila, i’m weekend ready!

. EFFORTLESS STYLE BASICS – DENIM, KNIT, ACCESSORIZE .

This week is turning into a super busy one, good, but busy! What comes with busy work days, blog socialising and events & also post work activities is a super tired me, and when i’m tired my style reverts massively to comfort and simplicity. The less fuss the better, comfort is an absolute necessity, and the closer the ensemble to my pyjamas the better. You know the drill. Todays outfit is one of those …

The trick with pulling off the ultimate simple look, is to ensure that each item you’re wearing looks quality & presentable in it’s own right. A denim jeans and knit jumper combo could look utterly awful, or effortlessly chic, it all depends on the individual items you pick up. I personally love Zara for affordable high street basics, and this ripped denim and oversized cream knit combo is super simple but still looks chic.

My other trick for making a simple denim & knit combo look a little more chic is to simply add some fabulous accessories … in my case Lady Celine and my new favourite lace up gladiator sandals. The two items sort of transform the look and make it look a little more dressy … but with absolutely minimal effort & fuss! Et Voila.

The perfect outfit to throw on when you really do need that extra 30 minutes in bed.

What’s your go to style when you just don’t have the energy to think about pulling together your look? Do you have any go to looks or tricks for keeping things comfy yet stylish?

    . Q&A WITH DELICIOUSLY ELLA – 5 THINGS I LEARNT .

Earlier this week I attended a fabulous Q&A & got to meet the lovely Ella Woodward of Deliciously Ella, the event was hosted by Shoreditch house and was a little brunch, a brief introduction by Ella to her blog and lifestyle, followed by an open floor Q&A. It was a intimate event which meant we really got to chat with Ella and ask her any questions we had about her lifestyle, career plans and her blog success. I personally asked a couple of questions, one more related to her lifestyle & the transition she went through, but also one more about her blog success and the journey she’s been on. The session was so insightful that I actually thought i’d share a few of the things I learnt and the tips Ella gave us in a series of posts, firstly today, with 5 of the lifestyle tips she shared with us, and secondly on Saturday I’m going to share some of the things I took from the Q&A relating to blogging and the commercial side of things.

Ella has made such a success of her blog & really pushed the agenda of healthy eating & healthy living here in the UK that it was a great to meet her, understand more about her lifestyle and way of living & just generally get inspired to kick start my own lifestyle a little. Whilst there were tons of things discussed, in terms of healthy living, there were 5 things I really took out of the Q&A which i wanted to share today.

TOP HEALTH COOKBOOKS TOP HEALTH COOKBOOKS

5 LIFESTYLE TIPS FROM DELICIOUSLY ELLA

#1 It’s not just what goes into your mouth …

One thing I really took from the session was that Ella’s lifestyle isn’t just about what she eats, it’s about her entire being & wellness. From regular exercise (spinning at 630am in the morning & regular yoga) to the products she uses for her body, skincare, hair care & even makeup. I actually hadn’t thought about this side of things, of course i’ve taken inspiration and advice from her on what I eat, how I prepare food and the ingredients that go into my dishes, but it was also really interesting to hear about how she transformed her whole lifestyle into one of natural products, removing any impurities from her routine.

Ella mentioned a couple of brands she likes for skincare and haircare, as well as a store which she regularly visits to pick up her favourite products, called Content Beauty in Marylebone.

#2 Don’t be conned by ready made alternatives …

Whilst the UK’s shift and fascination with health and wellbeing is definitely a brilliant movement & one which was well needed (Ella talked about how great the increased attention to health and wellbeing was), as a result, a lot of mass supermarket or food brands have jumped on the bandwagon and now sell ready made gluten / wheat / dairy free alternatives, but Ella discussed how these actually aren’t quite as good as what they say on the packet.

The increased attention has made the market for healthy goods much more pertinent, but Ella shared her concern for people going for the quick and easy ready made solutions, given they’re actually not quite as good as they sound. From pre prepared juices and gluten free produce, to ‘healthy’ natural cereal bars … she very much advocates avoiding these and making your own alternatives, not just because it’s cheaper, but because it’s healthier too (ready made products are still jampacked with refined goods & ingredients which simply aren’t good for you).

#3 Healthy eating can be cheaper …

There’s clearly a massive preconception that living a super healthy lifestyle, eating naturally and going for organic produce comes with a gigantic price tag. But Ella spoke very passionately about how this lifestyle doesn’t have to be expensive, and in fact can be far cheaper than buying ‘standard’ products and ready made alternatives, an example being the cost of making your own oat milk and the 20p versus £1+ price tags!

Ella’s top tip for keeping costs down was simple, buy in bulk. She recommended Amazon as her first port of call to stock up on all her whole food products as it’s so much cheaper than picking up smaller size products in the local supermarket or whole food dealers.

Her other tip which overall will help keep costs down is of course to be as organised as you can. Ella’s recommendation was to use Sunday’s to stock up on food (she makes a weekly Ocado order) & also to prepare as much as possible for the week ahead, not only to make things as easy as possible for you to keep up the healthy eating but also to ensure you have everything you need in your cupboards & don’t need to do expensive last minute purchases in your local store where everything comes at a premium.

#4 Make social situations work for you …

Ella’s vegan lifestyle is clearly far easier to stick to when you’re at home & living your day to day routine, but can be trickier when you’re busy, attending lot’s of social events and even more so in a new country or travelling and so have less healthy food readily available.

Ella talked candidly about the challenges she’s faced with people judging her no alcohol lifestyle and also the awkwardness of having to challenge menu’s in restaurants on social occasions. But with three years of experience of this lifestyle under her belt she had some top tips to help deal with this.

Firstly, don’t succumb to peer pressure, if you don’t want to drink then stand firm by your decision & be comfortable saying no, people that aren’t willing to accept this are ultimately those with the issues. Secondly, in restaurants, grab the waiter away from your table when you arrive at the restaurant and explain one on one your dietary requirements, and ask the waiter and chefs for their advice on what you can eat (her back up is to simply order a whole selection of sides – avocado, sweet potato fries, side salads etc). Thirdly, pre prepare as much as you can, the key thing I took from Ella regarding her lifestyle is that organisation is the real trick to mastering this way of living. Research, prepare your own food, carry healthy snacks on you & generally just ensure you’re never left stuck with no healthy food options.

As the demand for natural eating increases, so has the supply, there are now tons of healthy cafes, restaurants, brands & suppliers who make the whole lifestyle far easier to adapt to (Ella mentioned how much easier it is now, versus 3 years ago to find the ingredients & products she needs, and how much easier it is to eat out or on the go).

#5 Find what works for you …

One of my questions to Ella was about her transition into this lifestyle, for Ella (given her illness) it was an overnight shift (which she doesn’t recommend giving how much of an adjustment it actually is) but overall something she believes took her three months to fully embrace (to the point where she no longer found haribo or processed foods appealing).

Her recommendation for embracing this lifestyle was actually really refreshing, and realistic. It was simply to find out what works for you, and gradually start to embrace natural foods, healthy living & ultimately vegetables!

Her mentality around vegan living is that it’s about ‘adding’ to your life, and absolutely not about taking away (despite the fact that ultimately you will cut things like meat, alcohol, refined food & dairy out of your diet). This mentality was a really positive way of thinking about healthy living, and is important in ensuring that people don’t see this way of living as a diet or a fad, it’s about making healthier choices and eating clean.

Ella’s tips were to start by gradually introducing and adding new things into your lifestyle (the concept of adding, not cutting, as mentioned helps keep things positive and not too restrictive), a smoothie or juice in the morning, perhaps a healthy dinner once a week, or a superfood pack lunch in the week. I think her ambition is really admirable, but also realistic given how much this lifestyle takes to live in full, it’s not a take it or leave it concept, even a small change or shift towards healthy living is a positive one.

I personally very much took this feedback on board. I don’t want to give up fish or alcohol, but I do want to juice, eat naturally, cut gluten, take up yoga & increase my ‘super food’ intake, so knowing that just embracing 50% of the lifestyle is better than nothing was reassuring and motivational!

MEDIAMARMALADE_ENERGY_BALLS-2I found the Q&A really inspiring overall and Ella was a super lovely (and seriously beautiful) person, very articulate, confident and clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about this way of living. She talked with such passion and enthusiasm that you couldn’t help but leave feeling inspired and motivated to live better. The success of her book is a real credit to her hard work & passion, and if you haven’t already bought it then I seriously recommend picking it up (you can buy it here) :)

I was also utterly inspired by the success of her blog, her book, app & general brand (which is really growing at an exceptional rate, to the point where she now has an office & three team members supporting her) that I am going to do another post on Saturday with her tips, journey & key things I learnt from chatting to her about this – so make sure you stay tuned.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Ella’s way of living & whether you’ve tried any of her recipes or tips. Also of course, I hope you found this kind of post interesting :)
